Swiss System Based on Rating
Summary
In principle, the Swiss System on rating operates by grouping the players in groups with the same score (score group) and within these groups, ordering these players by rating. The main pairing principle is that the top player is paired with the player just under the half-way mark. The second player is paired against the next player under the opponent of the top player, and so forth. If there is an odd number of players in a score group, the lowest ranked player in the group is paired against the top available player in the next group down.
It is permitted to let the colour preference of players influence the pairing instead of just the colour allocation (colour relevance for pairing), provided that the maximum number of games to be paired within a scoregroup is not influenced.
Players never compete against the same opponent twice in a tournament. This will lead to strictly regulated adjustments in the pairing. In these adjustments the following criteria are relevant in descending priority.
1. the number of players to place in the next scorebracket has to be minimized; therefore as many pairings as possible have to be made in the same scorebracket.
2. (eventually): the colour preference of a maximum number of players will be granted;
3. players that in the former round were placed in a lower or higher scorebracket (up- or downfloat), should not be placed in a lower or higher scorebracket in the current round;
4. players that in the two consecutive rounds were placed in a lower or higher scorebracket (up- or downfloat), should not be placed in a lower or higher scorebracket in the current round;
This means that when it is not possible to fulfill all criteria in a scorebracket, the criteria with the lowest priority will be dropped first. In order to prevent the breaking of the criteria 3 or 4 it is never allowed to change the player(s) to move to a lower scorebracket.
The above mentioned procedures are translated in the following detailed procedures.
