Ton Sijbrands plaatst op pagina 501 van zijn boek Henk Smit, mijn leermeester en inspirator, na het interview van Jan Wielaard met Smit, eerder gepubliceerd in Dammen 113/114 van april 1996, een naschrift bij Henk Smit's reactie op het wegblijven van de vier afgevaardigde dammers naar het WK 1956, kort na de inval van de Sovjet-Unie in Hongarije. Volgens het programmaboekje zouden Koeperman, Sjawel, Kovrizjkin en Kogan namens de USSR debuteren op dit WK. Zij waren bovenaan geëindigd in het 3de kampioenschap van de Sovjet-Unie in Kiev.

Henk Smit in '56:
"De laatste dagen die aan het toernooi om het wereldkampioenschap voorafgingen, stonden in het teken van internationale spanningen. Leek de vrijheidsstrijd van de dappere Hongaren bijna gelukt te zijn, het opnieuw binnenrukken van de Russen deed het ergste vrezen. En zondag 4 november 1956, slechts één dag voor de eerste ronde van de wedstrijd, sloegen de barbaren op een mensonterende wijze toe. Wat zich in Hongarije heeft afgespeeld en nog steeds afspeelt, is met geen pen te beschrijven.
Mocht het organisatie-comité zich niet gelukkig prijzen dat het Russische viertal 'wegens bijzondere omstandigheden' verstek liet gaan? Voor de comitéleden ongetwijfeld een teleurstelling, gezien de enorme berg werk die jaren tevoren werd verzet. Maar beter een minder interessant toernooi dan een wedstrijd met deelnemers die een 'staat' vertegenwoordigen die Het Recht met machtsgeweld verkracht."

Sijbrands:
"Daar is geen woord Chinees bij. En het - indirect - door Smit aangesneden thema: sporten of boycotten, is nog altijd hoogst actueel, niet alleen voor 'Olympische' sporters maar zelfs voor dammers die uitgenodigd zijn om aan de World Mind Sports Games (Peking, oktober 2008) deel te nemen..."

Een hele geruststelling voor de in Beijing uitgenodigde dammers zal het standpunt van de Dalai Lama zijn over de twee maanden eerder in China plaatsvindende Olympische Spelen.

Dalai Lama calls for end to anti-Olympic protests

The Dalai Lama today called for Tibetans to end protests against the Beijing Olympics, also telling MPs in London he would happily accept an invitation to attend the event if relations with China improved.

The comments by the Tibetan spiritual leader came as his government-in-exile called for a temporary halt to all protests against Chinese rule over the territory while Beijing deals with the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake.

On its website, the government, based in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala, urged Tibetans not to demonstrate for at least a month.

The earthquake in the south-western Chinese province has killed more than 40,000 people.

The statement said: "In order to express our solidarity with the great natural disaster that befell on China, Tibetans across the world should shun staging demonstrations in front of the Chinese embassies in the respective host countries they live in."

Exiled Tibetans stage regular protests outside Chinese embassies, particularly in Nepal, over Chinese rule of the territory and the repression of dissent.

Citing advice from the Dalai Lama, the statement encouraged Tibetans to "explore the possibilities of establishing Sino-Tibetan friendship associations".

Addressing the Commons all-party committee on Tibet on the second day of his 11-day visit to the UK, the Dalai Lama called for a complete end to any protests connected to the Olympics.

"I appeal particularly to Tibetans," he said. "They should not disrupt the torch. I have made clear from the beginning, we fully support the Olympic games. The Olympic torch is part of that. We must protect it."

Pro-Tibet groups have staged several demonstrations against the Olympic torch during an international relay ahead of the August games. The procession descended into chaos in London and Paris.

The protests were held after China suppressed demonstrations against Chinese rule in March which spread from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.

The 72-year-old Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, eight years after China occupied the Himalayan territory, said he would gladly attend the games, although he admited this was unlikely to happen.

"I have had no indication about an invitation to the Olympic games," he said.

"Some Chinese want me to go there. If the situation in Tibet were to improve and there was a long-term solution, then I am ready to go to the Olympic games."

After his visit to parliament, the Dalai Lama told reporters he believed Beijing seemed to be serious about a new round of talks with officials from the exiled government, especially after the Chinese president, Hu Jintao, referred publicly to a meeting between the two sides on May 4.

"The president himself acknowledged that meeting, and he expressed seriousness about that meeting," the Dalai Lama said. "That never happened in the past."

He added: "After the next meeting and also after the Olympics, I think we can see whether the Chinese government's desire to meet our people was only for the Olympics or more serious."

The Chinese government – which has yet to respond to the government-in-exile's message - regularly accuses the Dalai Lama of orchestrating violent anti-Beijing protests.

The Dalai Lama will meet the prime minister, Gordon Brown, on Friday at the Archbishop of Canterbury's residence, Lambeth Palace, rather than at Downing Street - something critics claim is a sop to Chinese opinion.

However, the Tibetan leader insisted today he did not feel he had been snubbed, stressing his visit was primarily spiritual and that any row had been stirred by the media.

"I express my appreciation to the prime minister for showing genuine concern for Tibet," he said.

Brown's spokesman denied there had been any appeasement of China. "As far as we are concerned, the issue here is the substance of the meeting and the fact that the meeting is taking place at all," he said.

"On the previous two occasions the Dalai Lama came to the UK, he didn't meet the then prime minister at all."

The Dalai Lama will also meet the Conservative leader, David Cameron, and Prince Charles, a noted supporter of the Tibetan cause. A spokesman for the prince said today the pair would "talk about their interest in spiritual matters".

De Dalai Lama lijkt veel op Slawa Sjtsjogoljev en die gaat in oktober ook naar Beijing.

Ook topdammers naar Peking

Topdammers Alexander Schwarzman, Guntis Valneris en Kees Thijssen slapen deze week tijdens het DNC Open NK bij gastgezinnen. Over een kleine twee maanden brengen zij de nacht door in het Olympisch persdorp in Peking. De wereldtoppers geven van 3 t/m 18 oktober extra cachet aan de eerste World Mind Sport Games (WMSG). In totaal 3000 denksporters van diverse pluimage demonstreren dan in de hypermoderne Beijing National Convention Centre op een gewoon en een rapidtoernooi twee weken lang waartoe ze in staat zijn.

Penningmeester Frits Luteijn van de werelddambond (FMJD) ziet dit eerste evenement van een vierjaarlijkse cyclus bijkans als een persoonlijk prestigeproject. De oud-Hagenaar meldt trots dat er thans al 350 dammers uit meer dan zestig landen hebben toegezegd te willen deelnemen. Het betreft niet alleen dammers op de internationale 100-velden, maar ook op het 64 ruitenbord.

Schwarzman is wereldkampioen in beide disciplines en wil als zodanig ook in actie komen. In tegenstelling tot de Russen Alexei Tsjizjov, Alexander Georgiev en Slawa Tsjegoljev zullen de Nederlandse oud-wereldkampioen Ton Sijbrands en Harm Wiersma hoogstwaarschijnlijk niet naar Peking afreizen.

Via een open inschrijving mogen tevens een tiental ‘mindere goden’ op de WMSG optreden. Zoals de Westlandse topper Peter van der Stap en ook Luteijn zelf. De FMJD-bestuurder heeft ‘alles uit de kast gehaald om een volledige onzichtbaarheid van het damspel in Peking te vermijden’. “Zeker na de lobby van president Damiani van de internationale denksportfederatie IMSA in Moskou, gingen de geldkranen alsnog open en is het gaan stormlopen, waardoor de Olympische Spelen voor denksporters wat het dammen betreft nu een onvoorstelbaar succes dreigen te worden”.

Verheugend is de introductie van een nieuwe sport op de Olympische Spelen. Wheeldraughts, In het Chinees Xi Pong, is een combinatie van curling en Chinees dammen.
Op de volgende animatiefilm kunt u een indruk krijgen van deze in Groot-Brittanië populaire sport.

Other areas like Jilin, Shandong, Sichuan, Liaoning, Shanghai and Henan etc. are following closely. That is to say, the regional disparity in technical tactics is being narrowed. As P.E. departments attach more importance and popularize the draughts across the country, the number of draughts lovers increases, and the technical level has been improved accordingly. After the trial, the selected players will have about five days’ intensive training in Rizhao, Shandong Province, before they go to their local places. Not until the end of July will they gather again to get another intensive training in the Chinese checkers training base, i.e. Beijing Hongxing Middle School.

Is het wel zeker dat de Chinezen het internationale spel zijn gaan trainen en niet bijv. het Engels-Amerikaanse checkers?

Dat is zeker, want Casper van der Tak heeft diverse trainingsstages verzorgd. Maar waarschijnlijk zijn er ook wel checkers spelende Chinezen tijdens de WMSG.

Liefst 59 landen van de partij, een unicum. (Al zitten er een paar landen bij die geen landen zijn, zoals Guadeloupe.)

Leuk vind ik de deelname van Eddy Diaz uit Venezuela. Ik kwam hem jaren geleden tegen op VOG. Hij was daar bij toeval terechtgekomen en was verslingerd geraakt aan het internationale spel. We wisselden elkaars adressen uit en ik stuurde hem drie beginnersboekjes van Pieter Bergsma.

Hij zou een Spaanstalig damboek schrijven; ik weet niet of daar nog veel van gekomen is.

Jammer dat ik er niet bij kan zijn.
