Draughts with Bram Doeves :
MF Raoul Alias
Bram Doeves highlights a beautiful bridge or Draughts game for you every week. Interesting statements, a nice puzzle to think about or a report of a well played game. This week Draughts : MF Raoul Alias (1948), Draughts ambassador of Curaçao.
Raoul has spent most of his Draught period in Curaçao, as a player, trainer and administrator. He was also a director of the Pan-American Draught Federation there. As a Draught player, he has seen a lot of the world in many places in Europe and also in many places in the Americas. This section contains only a small selection (no fast Draught, no training) of the many Draught activities that Raoul developed.
Raoul started Draughts in the Netherlands: 1975-1989 and 1996-1999
Especially in the past, unexpected insights were often obtained from the hairdresser. It all started at the hairdresser for Raoul too! There, in 1974, an acquaintance gave him the book by Ton Sijbrands “Top Performance on the Draught Board”. Raoul was then 26 years old, then "still" enthusiastically started Draughts until today, both in the Netherlands and in Curaçao. In January 1975 he became a member of DC Diemen and subsequently of CDA and VAD. In 1989 he returned to Curaçao for 7 years, but from September 1996 to February 1999 he lived in the Netherlands again. During this period he was a member of Gandhi. Together with Achfaaq Mohammedjoesoef, Raoul has organized the International Bijlmerdam Tournaments; the Draught site Toernooibase.kndb.nl lists 11 tournaments and almost always many top drafts players took part. In 1997 Raoul did the great job of becoming champion of North Holland with a nice 16/11, ahead of Cor Westerveld and Herman van Westerloo with 15/11.
Raoul in Curaçao 1989-1996 and 1999-now
As a Draught player, he was twice champion of Curaçao in the first period, once champion of the International Draught Tournament in Guadeloupe, and with varying success he participated in the Pan-American Draught Championships three times, and was allowed to represent the Pan-American Draught Championships. Draughts participate in the 1994 World Cup in The Hague. From 1989-1991 he was secretary of the Curaçao Draughtbond and from 1994-1997 he was secretary for a year and then chairman of the Pan-American Draughtbond. In 1996 the World Draught Federation appointed Raoul as international Draught master (MF). In the period from 1999, Raoul held long-term board positions: he was secretary of the Curaçao Draughtbond during 1999-2000 and chairman during 2002-2016 (!) And from 1999-2011 (!) he was president of the Pan-American Draught Federation. In 1998 Raoul supervised Draught Club Gandhi (also with guest players) in Curaçao, as well as organizing matches against Curaçao Draught players. In 2000 Draught club Samen Sterk from Hazerswoude (Green Heart) was on a “tourist” holiday in Curaçao with 14 members. But could they also play Draughts ? Samen Sterk received an enthusiastic response from Raoul as secretary of the Curaçao Draught Association. Raoul organized no fewer than four matches. Van Klup Parokial Santa Familia won Samen Sterk 19-9, but Raoul saw enough bright spots in his press release for a revenge. That came indeed, because Skol Di Dam Strategia won 12-16. And then two more games were played against both clubs. Unfortunately, the popularity of Draughts in Curaçao is going downhill, just like in the Netherlands. There is currently nowhere a mutual club competition on Curacao. But a group of Draught players still play every Wednesday at Asiento (former Shell club) and Raoul recently proposed to start a mutual competition again. In the garden at Raoul's home in Willemstad, there is room enough to receive about 12 friends here almost every Sunday for a fun afternoon of drafts. There are here and there even more groups that play Draught in this way, and there are still the Curaçao Personal Championships every year, now organized by the president of the Curaçao Draught Association, Clifton Agata. In 2016 and 2018, Raoul again became champion of Curaçao.
International tournaments in which Raoul participated
Mentioned are already made of the Pan-American tournaments and the tournaments in the Netherlands and Guadeloupe; in 2007 Raoul took second place in the Open Draught championship of Suriname, and furthermore he played Draught in Hoogeveen (MTB), Karpacz (Polish Open), Salou, Prague, New York (USA Open), Aruba, Cuba, Abidjan Ivory Coast, Thailand and for the international tournament in Curaçao itself.
