In memory of Antanas Gimbutas

When talking about Lithuanian draughts composition we must mention a certain man who, although is not an active composer still plays rather a significant part in the current problemism. He is one of the best Lithuanian solvers, international draughts solution competition «The FMJD President's Cup», prizewinner - Antanas Gimbutas.
He became interested in draughts while still studying at Kaunas University of Technology. Actively participated in the 1950's - 1960's Lithuanian solution competitions. Also at the time A.Gimbutas tested his strength as a problemist too. Constantly participated in Lithuanian solution championships. Six times [1987, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1998] he became a prizewinner of these competitions. 2 times participant of Lithuanian draughts composition championships. In 1999, he finished in third place etudes (64) section, and in 2000, he ranked fourth miniatures (100) section. He was one of the Lithuanian draughts composition amateur union co-founders.
After L.Vitoshkin book series "Etudes Anthology" was published, A.Gimbutas did a great job of finding out and clarifying the defects of published etudes. Same work was done with etude and problem genre positions, which were published in magazines «Shashki», «Dambrete», «Shashechnyj mir», «Gorizonty shashek» and in B.Blinder, A.Hlasny, E.Skliar, K.Malshkevich books. The next step was to troubleshoot problems from various books and periodical publications, and then the A.van der Stoep book series «Dammenspel». The result of such work was A.Gimbutas ten parts anthology «FOUTEN ANTHOLOGIE» (2002-2008). This unprecedented work would not be possible without a special computer program, which was specially created for A.Gimbutas by his son Žydrūnas who defended his doctoral thesis in the field of mathematics at the Yale University [USA]. However, even with a computer program like that, not everyone would be able to do such an amazing job, for which without the special program, you still need to know modern composition rules, and have solver experience. Such a three-way relationship in A.Gimbutas, has brought an immense benefits to draughts composition.

Dear colleagues, dear admirers of the art of the zadacha draughts composition, I would like to present to your attention the translation into English of my article THE GIMBUTAS' SCORE. Originally, it was written in Russian and published (18.03.2008) on the website TAVLEI. This translation has been accomplished by me at the request of the International Grandmaster for draughts compositions Valdas Bieliauskas that he addressed to me in connection with the International Tourney in memoriam Antanas Gimbutas, announced earlier this year.

Additionally, I would like to say that I did this work gladly and with great enthusiasm, because I always hold in my heart the memory of this man of great personality, who not only helped me in mastering the wonderful program — the Gimbutas' Program — but, also, always gave me his both professional and moral support, which cannot be overestimated.
