1. 11-15 23-19 2. 8-11 22-17 3. 9-13 (A) 17-14 4. 10x17 21x14 5. 15-18 26-23 6. 13-17 31-26 7. 17-21 25-22 8. 18x25 29x22 9. 11-16 22-17 10. 4-8 14-10 11. 6x15 19x10 12. 7x14 17x10 13. 8-11 24-20 14. 5-9 28-24 15. 9-13 23-18 16. 2-6 18-14 17. 6x15 14-10 18. 16-19 32-28 19. 19-23(B) 26x19 20. 13-17 27-23 21. 17-22 23-18 22. 22-25 18-14 23. 25-29 14-9 24. 29-25 9-6 25. 25-22 6-2 26. 22-17 10-7(C) 27. 3x10 2-7 28. 11-16 20x11 29. 1-5 7x14 30. 17x10 24-20 31. 15x24 28x19 32. 5-9 11-8 33. 10-7 20-16 34. 7-3 8-4 35. 9-14 4-8 36. 14-18 16-11 37. 18-23 19-15 38. 23-27 15-10 39. 12-16 8-12 40. 16-19 12-16 41. 19-23 16-20 42. 27-31 20-24 43. 23-27 1/2-1/2
(A): The Laird and Lady Opening, once reknown as the sharpest and complicated way to begin a game. The romantic name from the 19th century adds to the reputation of this opening.
But, over the centuries it has lost some credit, as many lines were found and today it is still well established, but the most exciting lines have been tamed by analysts and players.
(B): And here we find an improvement over the move 19. 12-16 that had been played in World Championship Matches before. Ron King had sweet memories with it, as he deafeated Jim Morrison with the white apieces in their 1996 World Championship match. However, Sergio is well-prepared and chooses a line that ends up in an enmding in which red had to be careful to draw.
After the game it turned out that it was in fact played in a correspodence match before: Al Lyman v Jim Loy ID 1996. Home preparation for a World Championship Match must be thorough.
(C) Only way to escape with a draw
Score: Scarpetta 1, King 0, Drawn 13, 10 games to go.

(A): The White Dyke. An attempt to get a draw for white, but not offering much chances to score.
(B): Usual is 7 ... 26-23. The text move ends in a structure that is surprisingly hard to play for white, but still drawable.
(C): Theory prefers 10. ... 32-27 to draw. Elbert Lowder once tried 10. ... 31-27 against Asa Lot betteong (US Nationals 1980) and lost. Ron King's move is certainly not better then 10. ... 32-27, and might be the cause for his loss, but at least it is a step in the wrong direction.
(D): 11. 18-22 was already very strong at this point.
(E): 11. ... 30-25 to stop the 18-22 idea was called for. Now Ron King seems to fight for a lost cause.
(F): 14. ... 30-26 was played in Morrison-Lowder, US Nationals 1996, but red eventually won.
(G): After long thought Scarpetty realizes that due to the strong piece at 18, which can not be removed, white will eventually end up in zugzwang.
(H): As now 15. ... 30-25 does not win the piece: 16. 6-10 25x18, 17.10-15 and red wins.a
(I): A cunning attempt to create complications in his opponents time trouble.
(J): And here red atually misses the easier 21.14-17, but the position is still a win for red, and red manages to convert that.

What happened to Ronald King? Any explanation why he didn't show up?
