Organisator:Nicholas Ramsundar:

Draughts Can Only Grow If We Embrace the Whole World
If we want to see Draughts reach the global popularity of chess, then we must be bold enough to embrace inclusivity over exclusivity. That means giving countries outside of the traditional European powerhouses the chance to host major tournaments not just once, but consistently.
I don’t believe any country should host a championship if it cannot guarantee safety. That’s a basic standard. But in the case of Trinidad and Tobago, we have met every requirement. From full police coordination, daily escorts, venue control, and transport security our new TTDCA executive has set a standard of excellence. And with the support of national ministries, I truly believe this Women’s World Championship will be a success with the participation it deserves.
We’ve already seen what’s possible. The World Championship held in Cameroon had massive viewership, even more than some European hosted matches. That shows the world is eager for diversity. And it’s not about bashing any nation, this is about growth. Giving regions like Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia the spotlight is how you expand awareness, ignite passion, and build federations.
Every time we bring a world class event to a new region, we inspire governments, youth, and sponsors to get involved. We’ve already seen this across the Pan American region, where ministries of sport and education are showing increased interest. These events create momentum. They create belief.
Let’s not let gossip and small talk guide us. Let’s be guided by truth, by the work being done, and by the shared dream of making Draughts a global game.
Different cultures will always bring different styles of hosting and that’s what makes international events beautiful. That’s what makes them memorable.
Let’s believe in each other. Let’s show up for each other.
Let’s build something historic together. 🇹🇹

World Championship Women, Trinidad 27/9 -5/10, 2025

Nicholas Ramsundar
**Subject:** Official Statement – Response to Remarks Regarding Women's World Championship 2025

Dear Delegates, Federations, and Stakeholders,
Warm greetings from the Trinidad and Tobago Draughts and Checkers Association (TTDCA).
I am writing on behalf of the TTDCA, in partnership with the FMJD, to firmly refute recent public remarks made by Mr. Harry Otten, former President of FMJD, concerning the upcoming **Women’s World Draughts Championship 2025**, scheduled for **September 26 – October 6** in **Couva, Trinidad and Tobago**.
Please allow us to correct the misinformation and reassure all participating federations and players:
- The Government of Trinidad and Tobago declared a **State of Emergency (SOE)** set to end on **August 2, 2025** as a targeted and preemptive measure to neutralize a contained threat involving criminal elements within the prison system. This action led to the swift disruption of potential plans, with key individuals detained or placed under increased surveillance.
- No international visitors or public events have been affected. Thousands of international players and supporters continue to arrive for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in August and the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for September in Trinidad & Tobago.
- The official Championship venue and hotel are located in the **City of Couva**, a business and administrative district approximately one hour south of Port of Spain. The venue, **Couva Pt. Lisas Chamber of Commerce**, is situated beside the **Constituency Office of Couva South and the Office of the Prime Minister**, emphasizing our commitment to safety. The **Couva Police Youth Club** and a **Health Centre/Hospital** are also located nearby.
- The **Metro Hotel Couva** is a safe, modern facility in the city center. It is not in any “red-light” district — such zones do not exist in Trinidad & Tobago. The **Couva Police Station** is one minute from the hotel, and the area includes banks, shopping centers, and full amenities. The hotel is five minutes from the playing venue, with shuttle and police escort services provided, as was done successfully during last year's tournament.
- The **Government of Trinidad and Tobago**, through the **Ministry of Sport & Youth Affairs**, is fully backing the event with logistical support, secured accommodation, and coordinated efforts alongside the **Ministry of National Security**.
- All international delegations will be met at **Piarco International Airport** by protocol teams with immediate police escort and transportation to the Metro Hotel. Daily police presence and escort will be provided to and from the hotel and tournament venue. The Championship hall will be continuously secured and monitored.
- These high-level security protocols were successfully implemented during the **2024 Caribbean Youth Championship** held in Trinidad. All delegations were escorted safely with no incidents reported.
- **Trinidad and Tobago** has consistently hosted major international events peacefully and safely, including our world-famous Carnival.
This year’s Championship carries the theme **“Rise of the Queens”**, celebrating the empowerment of women in sports, leadership, and international representation. The timing aligns with our recent national elections, which saw women ascend to some of the highest offices in the country — reinforcing our nation’s commitment to gender equity and visibility on the global stage.
Couva proudly stands as a symbol of our growing stature as a premier **sporting tourism destination**, home to world-class facilities such as the National Aquatic Centre, Cycling Velodrome, FIFA-certified Football Stadiums, Athletics tracks, and more.
We invite all national federations to base judgments on facts and open dialogue. The TTDCA remains committed to transparency and welcomes any questions or clarifications.
We look forward to hosting the world’s best female draughts players in a **safe**, **secure**, and **celebratory** Championship.
With respect and anticipation,
**Nicholas Ramsundar**
President/CEO, TTDCA
