Very Experienced (Bijlmertournament!!) Referee Cor Verdel from Haarlem, who in Cap-Haïtien assisted chief-referee Hensley Rondei from Curaçao, sent the next information:
Dear Gentlemen,
It was a sparkling tournament with very many spectators!
From Lélio Marcos we received a CD-ROM on which interesting information is to be found.
The spectators release was enormous when the first game was won by Louiceus Shang Wong in the first round. Also in the 10th round in which Louiceus beat Fabrice Maggiore we were close to a blow-up of the roof.
The spectators were very excited, while during the game between Louiceus and Fabrice they were quite for 6 hours!
But I can imagine, Louiceus was there fellow townsman.
I enjoyed myself very much in Cap-Haïtien,
Cor Verdel

News from Raoul:
So my friends, this is my report about the 12th Pan-Am. Championship.
greetings, Raoul Alias.
Report about 12th Pan-American Draughts Championship in Cap Haitien, Haiti
In spite of all of the negative news about security and so on in Port-au-Prince we managed to play this championship with 12 players proceeding from Brazil,Canada, Curaçao, Guadeloupe, Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti. During our stay of some days in Port-au-Prince on our arrival and departure we just could not take notice of any insecure situation neither by day or by night. The organizing committee realy did a great job to host this championship in Cap Haitien and also the Haitien players were very well prepared for the battle. Ofcourse with the absence of the “Russianâ€?American and Surinam players the Haitian players remained as the first favourite to win the championship. The Haitian players and their coaches were hosted in Hotel Brise du Mer just around the corner where the games were played while all players from abroad, officials and also authorities from Port-au-Prince were hosted in the Rival Hotel, a two-years old hotel built on the edge of a mountain next to the beach and with an excellent view on the Atlantic Ocean and the north of Haiti.
Eventhough this hotel was on a 20 minute walking-distance to the RTK there was an air-conditioning bus to transport players and officials whenever they needed to.
On January 15 at 7 p.m. we held the opening-ceremonies and loting and started the next morning at 11 o’clock with the first round.
The championship was played in a very good ambiance with every day about approximately 200 expectators: men, women, boys and girls visiting the games.
The game of draughts is extremely popular in Haiti and especially in Cap Haitien.
The organizing committee had some kind of guard/policeman to keep the public quiet but after all I think that this was not realy needed as the population of Cap Haitien is very peacefull, polite, sincere and with a respectfull behaviour towards strangers.
This championship was sponsored by mr. Jose Ulysse, owner of a construction company in Port-au-Prince and also owner of the Radio and Telivision Station Konbit where the games were played in Cap Haitien. Mr. Jose Ulysse is a very quiet good man and has a warm heart for the game of draughts and now became the official sponsor of the Haitian Draughts Federation. Before the championship was finished we were trying to get a trainer from Holland for Haiti. Mr. Jose Ulysse is willing to pay one good trainer to come to Haiti for one year and prepare the players for the world championship in 2005 in Holland. The closing-ceremonies of this championship that started at 7 p.m. was a big party like never seen before on a Pan-American or a World Championship. There was about 350 to 400 guests and after the official part there was a show of cultural music, Haitian jazz and dancing that lasted until after 1 o’clock a.m.
We all know by now the good performance of the Haitian players in the championship. Also against each other they played good games. We want to thank them for this and also we do congratulate them with this achievement and wish them all the best in the coming world championship.
Also the referees Hensley Rondei and Cor Verdel did a very nice job and Nel Verdel was great at the computer and therefore they also receive our congratulation.
Finally we want to say thanks to all the players that did come to Haiti to play the championship especially mr. Maggiore who finds that we deserve a decoration from the FMJD for this achievement and to those players who did not come we say do not cry too much and next time better luck. The 13th Pan-American Championship with all probability will be held in july 2005 in Montreal Canada and the 14th edition during the Pan-American Games in 2007 in Rio Do Janeiro in Brazil.

Anthony Alexandre and Louicéus Shang Wong qualified for the Worldchampionship 2005 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.Claude wrote:hi Guys, great job . thanks to Raoul and all those who contribute for this wonderful tournament in my native country. And also i salute my haitian brothers for their courage and greatness to win this. Got a question:will the 2 haitian players play in this year worldcup or the 2005 worldcup?
The Worldchampionship-tournament is only once in two years.
In 2003 The Worldchampion Alexander Georgiev (Russia) defended his title with success. So in 2004 the number 2 from the Worldchampionship 2003, Alexej Tsjizjov (Russia), has the right to challenge Alexander Georgiev.
For the Worldchampionship 2005 in Amsterdam 9 players are qualified now, the first 7 from the Worldchampionship 2003 and the first two from the Pan-Am:
Alexander Georgiev (Russia), Alexej Tsjizjov (Russia), Guntis Valneris (Latvia), Ton Sijbrands (The Netherlands), Gérard Jansen (The Netherlands), Kees Thijssen (The Netherlands), Rob Clerc (The Netherlands), Anthony Alexandre (Haïti) and Louicéus Shang Wong (Haïti).
In the Worldchampionship only 20 players will proceed, so 11 others can qualify.

No Schwarzman was only number 11 in the last World Cup, after Ron Heusdens (nr.8 ), Alexander Guetmanski (9) and Bassirou Ba (10).
You can see his games (and these of others) in applet on the WK 2003-site from Henk Boers:
http://www.wkdammen2003.nl/
Go to 'partijen', the 10th link from above.
And there go to 'Animaties'.
Schwarzman did become Champion of Russia in 2003, before Tsjizjov, Georgiev and Guetmanski, so I hope he will qualify in the Russian championship 2004!

According to RAOUL ALIAS, there is a big sponsor in HAITI : José ULYSSE
the owner of RTK (Radio and Television ). There were also a lot of
spectators everyday ( often more than 100). And there were between 300
and 400 invited to closing ceremony !!!
Have you ever seen something like that in EUROPE, HANCO ?

Yes Jacques, I saw it during the Sugartournaments (Suikertoernooien) in the early seventees. They were hold in Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky on Damsquare in the centre of Amsterdam. In the weekends it was very difficult to see something of the topgames. For 7 years long round Christmas there was a Sugartournament in Krasnapolsky.Jacques PERMAL wrote:According to RAOUL ALIAS, there is a big sponsor in HAITI : José ULYSSE

In these days Ton Sijbrands and Harm Wiersma were superstars in The Netherlands. Every serious newspaper in our country had three, four times a year a pagelong interview with them.
In the Sugartournaments Sijbrands played and Wiersma and Baba Sy, Bassirou Ba, Mamina N'Diaye, Sjtsjogoljev, Andreiko, Koeperman, Gantwarg. It was extremely busy.
But now that we have the same opportunities in Haïti, why not do a Worldchampionship in Cap-Haïtien??
Would be good for Kees Thijssen, he loves tropical circumstances!

Schwarzman only one time was Worldchampion.Claude wrote:how many world titles for Schwartzman? 2 or 3? Is he less stronger now?cause i did not like his perfomance in the last worldcup
In 1998 he won the beautiful match with Tsjizjov.
You know the sick joke from Koeperman about Schwarzman?
Koeperman grinned that if Schwarzman ever would not be able anymore to earn his living with draughts, that for Alexander, with a tongue like that, there will always be a position in the postoffice at the stampsdepartment.
I think Schwarzman is capricious. As written, he won the championship of Russia in 2003.
To win this, before Tsjizjov, Georgiev and Guetmanski, is impossible if you're not extremely strong!!

hello Hanco and Claude !!
I had ever heard of Sugartournament in AMSTERDAM. According to friends who were spectators it was fabulous !!
I hope we will see tournaments like Sugartournament again in EUROPE.
I received a mail from ANDRE LECLERC from MONTREAL in french language.
Bonjour Jacques,

Hello Hanco,
I scrutinized analysis about RAOUL ALIAS games you had posted here.
Very strange bad move from GMI HANS JANSSEN !! It reassures me that
even GMI can sometimes make mistakes that perhaps a less strong
player couldn't have made !!
Against ROB CLERC, RAOUL was lucky !! Sure it was draw. But ROB
wanted absolutely to win !! BIG MISTAKE !!
