Brabantse textielfamilie versterkt greep op uitgever
Scheuren in het bastion van uitgever De Telegraaf

AMSTERDAM - De oplage van De Telegraaf neemt af en de zondagskrant is nog geen succes. Binnen de machtige Telegraaf-holding is een machtsstrijd losgebroken die nog niet is uitgewoed.
In de top van het mediaconglomeraat de Telegraaf is een felle machtsstrijd gestreden tussen de traditioneel machtige aandeelhoudersfamilies. De Brabantse textielbaronnen Van Puijenbroek hebben die strijd in hun voordeel beslecht en proberen hun greep op het concern verder te versterken.
Holding de Telegraaf, uitgever van de grootste krant van Nederland, gold tot voor kort als een grote familie, een hecht en gesloten bolwerk waar buitenstaanders geen vat op krijgen. Nu de bedrijfsresultaten na jaren van voorspoed onder druk komen te staan, worden de scheuren zichtbaar.
Vorige week sneuvelde de algemeen directeur en lid van de raad van bestuur Willem Kok. De familie Kok is eigenaar van een substantieel aandelenpakket. Het terugtreden van de directeur werd wereldkundig gemaakt middels een voor de Telegraaf uniek persbericht. Mededeling: er bestond ‘verschil van inzicht’ over de te volgen koers.
Kok wenst geen toelichting te geven op zijn vertrek. Maar duidelijk is dat hij binnen de raad van bestuur recht tegenover de voorzitter Ad Swartjes en huisaccountant Fred Arp is komen te staan. De nog jonge manager gold als een restant van de oude macht, die van de aandeelhoudersfamilies.
Per 1 januari van dit jaar is de structuur van het bedrijf veranderd. Voor het eerst kwam er een einde aan het collegiaal bestuur en werd een voorzitter benoemd: Swartjes. Kok dong naar die post, net als de financiële man, Arp. Swartjes kreeg het vertrouwen van de puissant rijke textielenbaronnen Van Puijenbroek, die een meerderheidsbelang vertegenwoordigen.
Ondanks een nettoresultaat over 2004 van ruim 22 miljoen euro, staat de rendementen bij het concern onder grote druk. Dit heeft de interne spanningen aangewakkerd. Kok gold als een bestuurder van de harde hand, terwijl Swartjes eerder de consensus zoekt. Vorig jaar vond een grote reorganisatie plaats waarbij honderden banen verloren gingen. Voor de bedrijfscultuur uniek; bij de Telegraaf werkte je voor het leven.
Het vertrek van Kok wordt door een van de directeuren betiteld als ‘een overwining van de visie op de traditie’. De Telegraaf moet volgens hem worden geleid als een modern bedrijf en in de dagelijkse leiding moest de macht van de familieclans worden gebroken.
Het wegwerken van Kok gebeurde met instemming van de raad van commissarissen, oftewel de familie Van Puijenbroek. Zij zouden nu uit zijn op de aandelenpakketten van de familie Kok en die van een derde machtige partij, de familie Borrius Broek uit Laren. Die laatste familie houdt zich afzijdig van concernpolitiek. De familie Van Puijenbroek weigert elk commentaar, maar de oude banden tussen de aandeelhoudersfamilies lijken verbroken.
Met het vertrek van Kok is de rust bij de Telegraaf nog niet terug. ‘Het rommelt op de tiende’, aldus een van de directeuren in het bedrijf. Op de tiende verdieping van het Telegraaf-gebouw aan de Basisweg in Amsterdam, zetelt de raad van bestuur.
Vanwege de daling in oplage van de krant, het commerciële mislukken van de zondagskrant en het gebrek aan visie op de toekomst, zal de machtsstrijd bij de Telegraaf op een lager niveau voortwoekeren. Ingewijden verwachten dat voor het einde van het jaar onder directeuren ‘nog enkele koppen gaan rollen’.
Swartjes, Arp en het vierde lid van de Raad, hoofdredacteur Johan Olde Kalter, weten zich veilig. Olde Kalter treedt binnenkort terug, de krant krijgt een nieuwe hoofdredacteur. De krant durft het vooralsnog niet aan over te stappen op halfformaat (tabloid), hoewel de plannen hiertoe tot in detail zijn uitgewerkt.
Nadat in een extern onderzoek werd vastgesteld dat het concern een visie op de toekomst ontbeert, probeert Swartjes de koers te verleggen. Net als andere uitgevers wil hij de Telegraaf uitbouwen tot een multimediaal concern waarbij hij vooral oog heeft voor televisie. Het belang van de Telegraaf in SBS is daartoe nooit aangewend.
Door de overname van SBS Broadcasting door een Amerikaanse en Engelse investeringsmaatschappij komt het Telegraaf-aandeel hier in het luchtledige te hangen.
John de Mol van Talpa heeft aangegeven graag met de nieuwe SBS-eigenaren te willen praten over overname van de Nederlandse zenders. Vooralsnog zeggen de Amerikaanse en Engelse investeerders niet te willen verkopen. Met de veroveringsdrang van De Mol en de innige relatie met de Telegraaf verwachten ingewijden dat Swartjes het belang in SBS snel van de hand zal doen.

Ruilen en tuitelen
De naam Van Puijenbroek hangt als een zwaard van Damocles boven de Nederlandse dagbladmarkt. De geschiedenis van een roemrijk r.k.-geslacht: van textiel-corporatisten tot Telegraaf-eigenaren.

'SOMS, ALS WIJ een boerse man in onze stamkroeg aan de Nieuwezijds zagen zitten, met een grote hoed op, dan riep een van ons: ''Pas op, De Puij, De Puij!'' en doken wij allemaal weg, gierend van de lach. Hoe deze Van Puijenbroek bij De Telegraaf tot zó een macht heeft kunnen komen, snappen wij ook niet.' Deze woorden tekende de Vrije Volk-journalist Nico Polak in de jaren zeventig op uit de mond van enige voormalige Telegraaf-redacteuren. De man voor wie iedere Telegraaf-redacteur sidderde, was de textielbaron Rudolf van Puijenbroek alias D'n Puij uit het Brabantse Goirle, sinds 1951 grootaandeelhouder en 'reddende engel' van het dagblad.
Rudolf is in 1983 overleden, maar de macht van de dynastie-Van Puijenbroek is ongebroken. De geest van De Puij leeft voort in zijn bejaarde weduwe 'Tuut' van Puijenbroek-Vroom (van Vroom & Dreesmann) en hun drie zoons Eduard Henri (1943), Alexander Johannes (1947) en Marnix Joseph (1950). Veertig jaar later hangt de naam Van Puijenbroek onverminderd als het zwaard van Damocles boven de Nederlandse dagbladmarkt. De familie staat op het punt de slag van de eeuw te slaan, met gevolgen voor alle Nederlandse dagbladen. Waarom zwijgen die eigenlijk in alle toonaarden?
Ben Knapen, hoofdredacteur van NRC Handelsblad, moest ongetwijfeld even slikken toen hij op 3 augustus het nieuws vernam: de NV Holdingmaatschappij De Telegraaf, eigenaar van het gelijknamige dagblad en een twintigtal aangesloten werkmaatschappijen, wil de Nederlandse Dagblad Unie (NDU) kopen, nu deze door uitgever Reed Elsevier in de verkoop wordt gedaan. De NDU-stal (NRC Handelsblad, Algemeen Dagblad en enige provinciale bladen) is felbegeerd, maar De Telegraaf-holding kan als enige gegadigde moeiteloos de vereiste zevenhonderd miljoen op tafel leggen. Het concern heeft een reserve van driekwart miljard en geen noemenswaardige schulden, zodat het zonder bezwaar nog eens voor een aanzienlijk bedrag aan aandelen kan uitzetten. Maar dat zal niet gebeuren, omdat de puissant rijke familie Van Puijenbroek onverminderd de Telegraaf-holding bestiert.
DIE MACHTSPOSITIE dankt de familie aan honderddertig jaar feodale uitbuiting, kuiperijen en rooms-katholieke machtspolitiek, of zoals het in Goirle heet: 'ruilen en tuitelen'. Aan het begin van de vorige eeuw duiken de Van Puijenbroeks op als pachters en smokkelaars in Goirle, een textieldorp onder de rook van Tilburg. De stamvader van de dynastie, de op latere leeftijd krankzinnig geworden Adriaan van Puijenbroek, bouwt een netwerk van huiswevers om zich heen en heeft rond 1850 voldoende kapitaal vergaard om tot de 'notabelste ingezetenen' van Goirle te worden gerekend. Zijn zoon Hendrik - 'den ouden Heer Harry' - richt in 1865 de Textielfabrieken H. van Puijenbroek op. De familie domineert al gauw de gemeentepolitiek - zoon Adriaan komt in 1900 zelfs in de Provinciale Staten - en bewerkstelligt de ontsluiting van Goirle op rijkskosten door de aanleg van een klinkerweg, een spoorlijn en een gasfabriek, die uiteraard aan het eigen bedrijf ten goede komen.
Maar als Goirle in 1908 voor het eerst de landelijke pers haalt, is het om een andere reden: de firma Van Puijenbroek ontketent een 'textieloorlog' door om te schakelen op de stoomweverij, waarbij honderdvijftig merendeels zwakke en oude handwevers op staande voet worden ontslagen. De daaropvolgende staking duurt vijf maanden en verdeelt het dorp in twee kampen. Klassenstrijd en concurrentiestrijd raken vermengd, vakbonden en textielfirma's gaan elkaar met knokploegen te lijf en de staking wordt tenslotte gebroken door tussenkomst van de beruchte pater en oprichter van het R.-K. Werkliedenverbond Alfons Ariëns, die het tot zijn taak rekent om de 'ordelievende elementen' onder de arbeiders 'dienstbaar te maken aan de afweer van het socialisme.'
HENDRIK HEEFT het bewind over de firma dan al overgedragen aan zijn vijf zoons. Na enige wisselingen in de directie blijft alleen Eduard als bedrijfsleider over, geheel overeenkomstig de traditie van het zogenaamde 'familisme': de sterkste familieleden overleven en de zwakkeren worden afgestoten. Nog in 1987 zal de jongste zoon van Ruud en Tuut, Godfried Antoon (1957), zich door de familie laten uitkopen omdat hij homoseksueeel is. Na de Eerste Wereltse textielfabrikant de vleugels uit buiten de landsgred trekken: de pas afgestudeerde Leidse jurist Maximilien P.L. Steenberghe, lid van de Rooms-Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP) en beschikkend over uitstekende Haagse connecties, die al gauw wordt opgenomen in de directie. Dank zij de defensie-orders die hij in de residentie voor zijn bedrijf binnensleept, komt de NV Van Puijenbroek tot grote bloei. Militaire leveranties zijn sindsdien de kurk waarop de firma drijft. Zoals een onder auspiciën van de familie uitgegeven brochure uit 1990 vermeldt: 'Voor het Nederlandse leger is Van Puijenbroek al sinds 1925 een vaste leverancier.' De bevoordeling door middel van r.k.-koehandel neemt pas echt een hoge vlucht als Steenberghe vanaf 1934 minister van Economische Zaken wordt in twee opeenvolgende kabinetten-Colijn.
BIJ DE OPMARS van Van Puijenbroek Textiel is een bijzondere rol weggelegd voor de jonge Tilburgse bedrijfspsycholoog en coming man in de RKSP, prof. Jan E. de Quay. Deze is eind jaren dertig inkoper voor de Nederlandse krijgsmacht en tevens commissaris bij de Nederlandse Vlasspinnerij in Tilburg, die in 1916 is opgezet door een andere telg van de oude Hendrik: Henri van Puijenbroek. De Quay heeft een heel eigen kijk op het economisch herstel: naar analogie van Hitler-Duitsland moet de crisis worden bestreden door de militaire produktie op te voeren, niet in de laatste plaats - uiteraard - de produktie van uniformlaken te Goirle. Ondanks de malaise in de textiel draait de NV Van Puijenbroek in de jaren dertig derhalve op volle toeren. In een circulaire aan de klanten uit 1939 verontschuldigt de firma zich zelfs voor de lange wachttijden, want 'ons bedrijf werkt nog steeds op volle kracht voor de Nederlandse regering ten behoeve van Defensie'.
Als bewijs van hun nieuwe welstand verwerven de Van Puijenbroekjes eind jaren dertig door 'ruilen en tuitelen' (waaronder handjeklap met de levensverzekeringsmaatschappij De Utrecht, die als koper optreedt) het kapitale landgoed 'Gorp en Rovert', dat zich uitstrekt van Hilvarenbeek in Brabant tot Poppel in België. De pachters van Gorp en Rovert worden door D'n Puij als lijfeigenen behandeld, soms in letterlijke zin. Volgens streekhistorici maakte Eduard onder meer een dienstbode zwanger, die later trouwde met een op zijn fabriek werkzame smid.
Voormalige pachters en werknemers zijn het over een ding eens: de familie is belast met een ziekelijke gierigheid. Zelfs met Kerstmis kan er van het reusachtige landgoed geen gratis kerstboom af. Intussen houdt de familie jachtpartijen voor hoge gasten, waarbij volgens dorpelingen prins Bernhard meermalen aanwezig is. Gorp en Rovert is nog altijd de behouden veste van de familie, die er tegenwoordig onder meer een rundveefokkerij en modelboerderij drijft.
DE POLITIEKE malaise van jaren dertig gaat ook aan Van Puijenbroek niet voorbij, maar radicale katholieke bewegingen als het Zwart Front van de antisemiet Arnold Meijer, dat het bij arbeidsconflicten vaak voor de werknemers opneemt, zijn in hun kring allesbehalve populair. Eerder kiest men voor de autoritaire variant van het corporatisme zoals die wordt verdedigd door Jan de Quay, zoals te lezen valt in de monografie Goirle 1940-45: Een grensdorp bedreigd, bezet en bevrijd (uit 1994): 'In het katholieke zuiden was er over het algemeen veel belangstelling voor bepaalde fascistische stromingen. Dit is niet verwonderlijk, gezien het verdrag van Mussolini met het Vaticaan. Met name ontevreden Brabantse werkgevers en zakenlieden die zich ergerden aan de te democratische koers van de RKSP, toonden belangstelling. De belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van deze groep met rechts-autoritaire sympathieën waren de Goirlenaren E. van Puijenbroek (industrieel), mr. M.P.L. Steenberghe, en mr. B.J.M. van Spaendonck uit Tilburg.' Wat deze streekgeschiedenis niet vermeld, is dat het drietal Steenberghe, Van Spaendonck en De Quay in 1933 Mussert aanbiedt om het NSB-programma 'om te werken' zodat het voor de r.-k.-Kerk aanvaardbaar wordt.
In oorlogstijd produceert Van Puijenbroek net als de meeste Westbrabantse textielfabrikanten voor de Duitsers - onder het mom van de bescherming van hun werknemers tegen uitzending naar Duitsland. 'Door te werken voor de bezetter kregen de fabrieken de zogenaamde 'S'-status (Sperrbetriebe), wat hun werknemers vrijwaarde voor uitzending naar Duitsland', zo staat te lezen in Goirle 1940-45. Maar dan moeten de arbeiders wel werkweken van minstens 36 uur maken, wat bij de teruglopende bedrijvigheid steeds moeilijker wordt. Van Puijenbroek weet zeventig werknemers te 'vrijwaren' van de Arbeitsdienst door hen te werk te stellen in de ontginning van zijn landgoed. De geschoolde wevers en ververs breken hun ruggen op de harde zandgrond. In wezen verrichten zij dwangarbeid, want bij werkweigering volgt onmiddellijke uitzending naar Duitsland.
Op 15 augustus 1942 worden op het landgoed van Van Puijenbroek vijf gijzelaars uit de kampen Haaren en St. Michielsgestel gefusilleerd. Behalve de boswachter zijn alleen Eduard van Puijenbroek en twee van zijn voorlieden op de hoogte van de plaats van executie, maar zij houden die tot na de oorlog geheim. Hoe de precieze relatie tussen Van Puijenbroek en de bezetter is geweest, is niet bekend. De eerste en enige die ooit een blik in het bedrijfsarchief van Van Puijenbroek heeft mogen werpen, de historicus Thijs Kemmeren, kreeg slechts inzage in de stukken tot mei 1940.
Van opzettelijke collaboratie kan echter geen sprake zijn geweest, want de Van Puijenbroeks onderschrijven sinds 1865 maar één ideologie: het welbegrepen eigenbelang. Als tegen het einde van de oorlog de hongersnood toeslaat, wil Van Puijenbroek nog wel eens aardappelen uitdelen aan de armen, maar niet aan voormalige stakers, ook al is de staking inmiddels veertig jaar geleden. 'Ge wit nog wel van 1904', bijt Eduard hen toe, 'gij krijgt geen eerpels.'
ALS IN DE herfst van 1944 het zuiden van Nederland wordt bevrijd, maakt ook in Tilburg en omstreken de oud-illegaliteit zich op voor de afrekening. Zover komt het echter niet, want het Militair Gezag geeft geen prioriteit aan de economische zuivering. In veel bedrijven krijgt de directie toestemming om het eigen personeel te zuiveren, met als gevolg dat veel 'kleine' NSB'ers en zwarthandelaren worden gearresteerd en veroordeeld, maar niet de 'grote' collaborateurs. Tot woede van de schrijver en verzetsman Anton Coolen, die talloze krantenartikelen en diverse brochures aan het schandaal wijdt, gaan de fabrikanten met goede connecties in de vooroorlogse RKSP veelal vrijuit. De belangrijkste dossiers in de regio Tilburg worden afgedaan door een zuiveringscommissie onder leiding van Van Puijenbroeks oude bekende B.J.M. van Spaendonck.
Van Puijenbroek ontspringt de dans (de concurrent Van Besouw wordt wel veroordeeld wegens collaboratie) en weet onmiddellijk opdrachten van de Gealllieerden in de wacht te slepen. Tussen november 1944 en november 1945 krijgt de firma Canadese legersorders voor een totaal bedrag van f674.000,- in die dagen een fortuin. De oude relaties met Steenberghe (die in mei 1940 met het kabinet naar Londen was gevlucht en vandaar naar Amerika doorgereisd) en De Quay (die ondanks zijn leiderschap van de Nederlandse Unie direct na de bevrijding minister van Oorlog in het 'Brabantse' kabinet-Gerbrandy wordt) zijn daar niet vreemd aan. Vanaf 1945 ruilen en tuitelen de Van Puijenbroeks niet meer op dorpsniveau, maar behoren zij tot de invloedrijkste katholieke families van Nederland.
IN HET REEDS gememoreerde familisme past ook het huwelijk in 1943 van zoon Rudolf met het verre familielid Gertruda Godefrieda 'Tuut' Vroom, van de sinds 1887 gelieerde Vroomen en Dreesmannen. Tuut, tegenwoordig de peetmoeder van de dynastie Van Puijenbroek, was na haar studie theologie in Nijmegen voorbestemd om 'katholiek journalist' te worden, maar de familieplicht riep. Van 1957 tot 1962 zou zij als wethouder de Goirlese gemeentepolitiek domineren.
De familie bestierde in paternalistische trant het hele dagelijks leven, van de ijsclub tot het verpleeghuis en van de harmonie tot het plaatselijke zwembad. Nog altijd zwaait de 75-jarige weduwe de scepter over haar zoons, zij het minder prominent dan voorheen. De Telegraaf besteedt aan Tuuts 'liefdadigheidswerk' nog jaarlijks verplicht een welwillend artikel, maar vermeldt daarin nimmer hoe de familie sinds 1951 het gehele concern in haar greep heeft. Een dergelijke terugblik op de onverkwikkelijke periode van naoorlogse restauratie kan de krant zich niet veroorloven.
Elke krant of uitgeverij heeft wel een zwarte bladzijde in zijn geschiedenis, maar van De Telegraaf kun je je afvragen wanneer hij eigenlijk niet fout is geweest. Welnu, dat was op zijn laatst in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, toen de krant goede contacten onderhield met geallieerde diplomaten en zelfs enige tijd voor Londen en Parijs spioneerde. Eigenaar H.M.C. Holdert was toen nog anti-Duits. Daarna ging het met De Telegraaf bergafwaarts. Na Hitlers Machtübernahme benoemde Holdert zijn Berlijnse correspondent Goedemans tot hoofdredacteur. Met het oog op de gewijzigde verhoudingen werd het Berlijnse correspondentschap overgedragen aan de Haagse bankierszoon met grote Duitse belangen, dr. mr. I.G. ('Gerrie') van Maasdijk. Gerrie van Maasdijk was geen nazi, maar zijn eveneens in Berlijn gevestigde broer Robert wèl. Omdat broerlief de kopij vaak even naliep, kwam de Duitse berichtgeving van De Telegraaf dus reeds in 1933 uit de koker van Joseph Goebbels. Toen Holdert in 1944 overleed, kwam De Telegraaf in handen van zijn drie dochters en zijn zwakbegaafde zoon, de SS'er en Oostfrontstrijder 'Hakkie'.
NA DE BEVRIJDING kreeg de krant een verschijningsverbod voor dertig jaar opgelegd en verviel het aandeel van 'Hakkie' aan de Staat der Nederlanden, maar al in 1949 rolde de krant weer van de persen. De katholieke jurist en politicus L.G. Kortenhorst, die in die tijd onder meer de oorlogsmisdadiger en profiteur Pieter Menten vrijpleitte, had de zwaar gecompromitteerde redactie met succes verdedigd ('goede vaderlanders, fijne mensen, bekwame journalisten') omdat hij de krant beschouwde als alternatief voor de Volkskrant, die te 'zuiver' uit de oorlog was gekomen. Als kamervoorzitter speelde Kortenhorst de redactie onder meer het dossier-Menten toe met de opdracht: verdedig die man - hetgeen geschiedde door middel van insinuerende artikelen in de beste Telegraaf-traditie.
In 1951 wist Kortenhorst de minister van Financiën Lieftinck te overreden om het staatsaandeel voor de spotprijs van f120.000,- van de hand te doen. Ook de noodlijdende gezusters Holdert wilden voor die prijs van hun aandelen af. Kortenhorst aarzelde geen moment.
Door zijn tussenkomst, en op voorspraak van Steenberghe en De Quay, kwam de krant zoals dat heet in 'vertrouwde handen'. Gerrie van Maasdijk (inmiddels hofdignitaris op Soestdijk), de dochter van de voormalige hoofdredacteur J.M. Goedemans, de Leidse meelfabrikant en voormalige perschef van prins Bernhard A.D. 'Don' de Koster en de aan de Holderts gelieerde familie Borrius Broek kochten elk een aandeel van een zesde. Rudolf van Puijenbroek nam twee zesde voor zijn rekening met de woorden: 'Wat maakt het uit of ik mijn geld kwijtraak aan de socialisten of aan De Telegraaf.' Kwijtraken? De investering leverde de familie een honderdvoudige winst op, omdat een 'neutraal' sensatieblad met een hart voor God, Koningin en Vaderland een gapend gat in de verzuilde dagbladmarkt vulde. Kortenhorst placht in later jaren de grap te maken dat De Telegraaf dank zij de schatrijke Van Puijenbroek voortaan 'de meest katholieke krant van Nederland' was.
Katholiek is de krant allang niet meer; de nieuwe religie van de NV Holdingmaatschappij De Telegraaf is de advertentiemarkt.
Brabantse textielfamilie versterkt greep op uitgever

AMSTERDAM - De oplage van De Telegraaf neemt af en de zondagskrant is nog geen succes. Binnen de machtige Telegraaf-holding is een machtsstrijd losgebroken die nog niet is uitgewoed.
In de top van het mediaconglomeraat de Telegraaf is een felle machtsstrijd gestreden tussen de traditioneel machtige aandeelhoudersfamilies. De Brabantse textielbaronnen Van Puijenbroek hebben die strijd in hun voordeel beslecht en proberen hun greep op het concern verder te versterken.
Holding de Telegraaf, uitgever van de grootste krant van Nederland, gold tot voor kort als een grote familie, een hecht en gesloten bolwerk waar buitenstaanders geen vat op krijgen. Nu de bedrijfsresultaten na jaren van voorspoed onder druk komen te staan, worden de scheuren zichtbaar.
Vorige week sneuvelde de algemeen directeur en lid van de raad van bestuur Willem Kok. De familie Kok is eigenaar van een substantieel aandelenpakket. Het terugtreden van de directeur werd wereldkundig gemaakt middels een voor de Telegraaf uniek persbericht. Mededeling: er bestond ‘verschil van inzicht’ over de te volgen koers.
Kok wenst geen toelichting te geven op zijn vertrek. Maar duidelijk is dat hij binnen de raad van bestuur recht tegenover de voorzitter Ad Swartjes en huisaccountant Fred Arp is komen te staan. De nog jonge manager gold als een restant van de oude macht, die van de aandeelhoudersfamilies.
Per 1 januari van dit jaar is de structuur van het bedrijf veranderd. Voor het eerst kwam er een einde aan het collegiaal bestuur en werd een voorzitter benoemd: Swartjes. Kok dong naar die post, net als de financiële man, Arp. Swartjes kreeg het vertrouwen van de puissant rijke textielenbaronnen Van Puijenbroek, die een meerderheidsbelang vertegenwoordigen.
Ondanks een nettoresultaat over 2004 van ruim 22 miljoen euro, staat de rendementen bij het concern onder grote druk. Dit heeft de interne spanningen aangewakkerd. Kok gold als een bestuurder van de harde hand, terwijl Swartjes eerder de consensus zoekt. Vorig jaar vond een grote reorganisatie plaats waarbij honderden banen verloren gingen. Voor de bedrijfscultuur uniek; bij de Telegraaf werkte je voor het leven.
Het vertrek van Kok wordt door een van de directeuren betiteld als ‘een overwining van de visie op de traditie’. De Telegraaf moet volgens hem worden geleid als een modern bedrijf en in de dagelijkse leiding moest de macht van de familieclans worden gebroken.
Het wegwerken van Kok gebeurde met instemming van de raad van commissarissen, oftewel de familie Van Puijenbroek. Zij zouden nu uit zijn op de aandelenpakketten van de familie Kok en die van een derde machtige partij, de familie Borrius Broek uit Laren. Die laatste familie houdt zich afzijdig van concernpolitiek. De familie Van Puijenbroek weigert elk commentaar, maar de oude banden tussen de aandeelhoudersfamilies lijken verbroken.
Met het vertrek van Kok is de rust bij de Telegraaf nog niet terug. ‘Het rommelt op de tiende’, aldus een van de directeuren in het bedrijf. Op de tiende verdieping van het Telegraaf-gebouw aan de Basisweg in Amsterdam, zetelt de raad van bestuur.
Vanwege de daling in oplage van de krant, het commerciële mislukken van de zondagskrant en het gebrek aan visie op de toekomst, zal de machtsstrijd bij de Telegraaf op een lager niveau voortwoekeren. Ingewijden verwachten dat voor het einde van het jaar onder directeuren ‘nog enkele koppen gaan rollen’.
Swartjes, Arp en het vierde lid van de Raad, hoofdredacteur Johan Olde Kalter, weten zich veilig. Olde Kalter treedt binnenkort terug, de krant krijgt een nieuwe hoofdredacteur. De krant durft het vooralsnog niet aan over te stappen op halfformaat (tabloid), hoewel de plannen hiertoe tot in detail zijn uitgewerkt.
Nadat in een extern onderzoek werd vastgesteld dat het concern een visie op de toekomst ontbeert, probeert Swartjes de koers te verleggen. Net als andere uitgevers wil hij de Telegraaf uitbouwen tot een multimediaal concern waarbij hij vooral oog heeft voor televisie. Het belang van de Telegraaf in SBS is daartoe nooit aangewend.
Door de overname van SBS Broadcasting door een Amerikaanse en Engelse investeringsmaatschappij komt het Telegraaf-aandeel hier in het luchtledige te hangen.
John de Mol van Talpa heeft aangegeven graag met de nieuwe SBS-eigenaren te willen praten over overname van de Nederlandse zenders. Vooralsnog zeggen de Amerikaanse en Engelse investeerders niet te willen verkopen. Met de veroveringsdrang van De Mol en de innige relatie met de Telegraaf verwachten ingewijden dat Swartjes het belang in SBS snel van de hand zal doen.

Ruilen en tuitelen
De naam Van Puijenbroek hangt als een zwaard van Damocles boven de Nederlandse dagbladmarkt. De geschiedenis van een roemrijk r.k.-geslacht: van textiel-corporatisten tot Telegraaf-eigenaren.

'SOMS, ALS WIJ een boerse man in onze stamkroeg aan de Nieuwezijds zagen zitten, met een grote hoed op, dan riep een van ons: ''Pas op, De Puij, De Puij!'' en doken wij allemaal weg, gierend van de lach. Hoe deze Van Puijenbroek bij De Telegraaf tot zó een macht heeft kunnen komen, snappen wij ook niet.' Deze woorden tekende de Vrije Volk-journalist Nico Polak in de jaren zeventig op uit de mond van enige voormalige Telegraaf-redacteuren. De man voor wie iedere Telegraaf-redacteur sidderde, was de textielbaron Rudolf van Puijenbroek alias D'n Puij uit het Brabantse Goirle, sinds 1951 grootaandeelhouder en 'reddende engel' van het dagblad.
Rudolf is in 1983 overleden, maar de macht van de dynastie-Van Puijenbroek is ongebroken. De geest van De Puij leeft voort in zijn bejaarde weduwe 'Tuut' van Puijenbroek-Vroom (van Vroom & Dreesmann) en hun drie zoons Eduard Henri (1943), Alexander Johannes (1947) en Marnix Joseph (1950). Veertig jaar later hangt de naam Van Puijenbroek onverminderd als het zwaard van Damocles boven de Nederlandse dagbladmarkt. De familie staat op het punt de slag van de eeuw te slaan, met gevolgen voor alle Nederlandse dagbladen. Waarom zwijgen die eigenlijk in alle toonaarden?
Ben Knapen, hoofdredacteur van NRC Handelsblad, moest ongetwijfeld even slikken toen hij op 3 augustus het nieuws vernam: de NV Holdingmaatschappij De Telegraaf, eigenaar van het gelijknamige dagblad en een twintigtal aangesloten werkmaatschappijen, wil de Nederlandse Dagblad Unie (NDU) kopen, nu deze door uitgever Reed Elsevier in de verkoop wordt gedaan. De NDU-stal (NRC Handelsblad, Algemeen Dagblad en enige provinciale bladen) is felbegeerd, maar De Telegraaf-holding kan als enige gegadigde moeiteloos de vereiste zevenhonderd miljoen op tafel leggen. Het concern heeft een reserve van driekwart miljard en geen noemenswaardige schulden, zodat het zonder bezwaar nog eens voor een aanzienlijk bedrag aan aandelen kan uitzetten. Maar dat zal niet gebeuren, omdat de puissant rijke familie Van Puijenbroek onverminderd de Telegraaf-holding bestiert.
DIE MACHTSPOSITIE dankt de familie aan honderddertig jaar feodale uitbuiting, kuiperijen en rooms-katholieke machtspolitiek, of zoals het in Goirle heet: 'ruilen en tuitelen'. Aan het begin van de vorige eeuw duiken de Van Puijenbroeks op als pachters en smokkelaars in Goirle, een textieldorp onder de rook van Tilburg. De stamvader van de dynastie, de op latere leeftijd krankzinnig geworden Adriaan van Puijenbroek, bouwt een netwerk van huiswevers om zich heen en heeft rond 1850 voldoende kapitaal vergaard om tot de 'notabelste ingezetenen' van Goirle te worden gerekend. Zijn zoon Hendrik - 'den ouden Heer Harry' - richt in 1865 de Textielfabrieken H. van Puijenbroek op. De familie domineert al gauw de gemeentepolitiek - zoon Adriaan komt in 1900 zelfs in de Provinciale Staten - en bewerkstelligt de ontsluiting van Goirle op rijkskosten door de aanleg van een klinkerweg, een spoorlijn en een gasfabriek, die uiteraard aan het eigen bedrijf ten goede komen.
Maar als Goirle in 1908 voor het eerst de landelijke pers haalt, is het om een andere reden: de firma Van Puijenbroek ontketent een 'textieloorlog' door om te schakelen op de stoomweverij, waarbij honderdvijftig merendeels zwakke en oude handwevers op staande voet worden ontslagen. De daaropvolgende staking duurt vijf maanden en verdeelt het dorp in twee kampen. Klassenstrijd en concurrentiestrijd raken vermengd, vakbonden en textielfirma's gaan elkaar met knokploegen te lijf en de staking wordt tenslotte gebroken door tussenkomst van de beruchte pater en oprichter van het R.-K. Werkliedenverbond Alfons Ariëns, die het tot zijn taak rekent om de 'ordelievende elementen' onder de arbeiders 'dienstbaar te maken aan de afweer van het socialisme.'
HENDRIK HEEFT het bewind over de firma dan al overgedragen aan zijn vijf zoons. Na enige wisselingen in de directie blijft alleen Eduard als bedrijfsleider over, geheel overeenkomstig de traditie van het zogenaamde 'familisme': de sterkste familieleden overleven en de zwakkeren worden afgestoten. Nog in 1987 zal de jongste zoon van Ruud en Tuut, Godfried Antoon (1957), zich door de familie laten uitkopen omdat hij homoseksueeel is. Na de Eerste Wereltse textielfabrikant de vleugels uit buiten de landsgred trekken: de pas afgestudeerde Leidse jurist Maximilien P.L. Steenberghe, lid van de Rooms-Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP) en beschikkend over uitstekende Haagse connecties, die al gauw wordt opgenomen in de directie. Dank zij de defensie-orders die hij in de residentie voor zijn bedrijf binnensleept, komt de NV Van Puijenbroek tot grote bloei. Militaire leveranties zijn sindsdien de kurk waarop de firma drijft. Zoals een onder auspiciën van de familie uitgegeven brochure uit 1990 vermeldt: 'Voor het Nederlandse leger is Van Puijenbroek al sinds 1925 een vaste leverancier.' De bevoordeling door middel van r.k.-koehandel neemt pas echt een hoge vlucht als Steenberghe vanaf 1934 minister van Economische Zaken wordt in twee opeenvolgende kabinetten-Colijn.
BIJ DE OPMARS van Van Puijenbroek Textiel is een bijzondere rol weggelegd voor de jonge Tilburgse bedrijfspsycholoog en coming man in de RKSP, prof. Jan E. de Quay. Deze is eind jaren dertig inkoper voor de Nederlandse krijgsmacht en tevens commissaris bij de Nederlandse Vlasspinnerij in Tilburg, die in 1916 is opgezet door een andere telg van de oude Hendrik: Henri van Puijenbroek. De Quay heeft een heel eigen kijk op het economisch herstel: naar analogie van Hitler-Duitsland moet de crisis worden bestreden door de militaire produktie op te voeren, niet in de laatste plaats - uiteraard - de produktie van uniformlaken te Goirle. Ondanks de malaise in de textiel draait de NV Van Puijenbroek in de jaren dertig derhalve op volle toeren. In een circulaire aan de klanten uit 1939 verontschuldigt de firma zich zelfs voor de lange wachttijden, want 'ons bedrijf werkt nog steeds op volle kracht voor de Nederlandse regering ten behoeve van Defensie'.
Als bewijs van hun nieuwe welstand verwerven de Van Puijenbroekjes eind jaren dertig door 'ruilen en tuitelen' (waaronder handjeklap met de levensverzekeringsmaatschappij De Utrecht, die als koper optreedt) het kapitale landgoed 'Gorp en Rovert', dat zich uitstrekt van Hilvarenbeek in Brabant tot Poppel in België. De pachters van Gorp en Rovert worden door D'n Puij als lijfeigenen behandeld, soms in letterlijke zin. Volgens streekhistorici maakte Eduard onder meer een dienstbode zwanger, die later trouwde met een op zijn fabriek werkzame smid.
Voormalige pachters en werknemers zijn het over een ding eens: de familie is belast met een ziekelijke gierigheid. Zelfs met Kerstmis kan er van het reusachtige landgoed geen gratis kerstboom af. Intussen houdt de familie jachtpartijen voor hoge gasten, waarbij volgens dorpelingen prins Bernhard meermalen aanwezig is. Gorp en Rovert is nog altijd de behouden veste van de familie, die er tegenwoordig onder meer een rundveefokkerij en modelboerderij drijft.
DE POLITIEKE malaise van jaren dertig gaat ook aan Van Puijenbroek niet voorbij, maar radicale katholieke bewegingen als het Zwart Front van de antisemiet Arnold Meijer, dat het bij arbeidsconflicten vaak voor de werknemers opneemt, zijn in hun kring allesbehalve populair. Eerder kiest men voor de autoritaire variant van het corporatisme zoals die wordt verdedigd door Jan de Quay, zoals te lezen valt in de monografie Goirle 1940-45: Een grensdorp bedreigd, bezet en bevrijd (uit 1994): 'In het katholieke zuiden was er over het algemeen veel belangstelling voor bepaalde fascistische stromingen. Dit is niet verwonderlijk, gezien het verdrag van Mussolini met het Vaticaan. Met name ontevreden Brabantse werkgevers en zakenlieden die zich ergerden aan de te democratische koers van de RKSP, toonden belangstelling. De belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van deze groep met rechts-autoritaire sympathieën waren de Goirlenaren E. van Puijenbroek (industrieel), mr. M.P.L. Steenberghe, en mr. B.J.M. van Spaendonck uit Tilburg.' Wat deze streekgeschiedenis niet vermeld, is dat het drietal Steenberghe, Van Spaendonck en De Quay in 1933 Mussert aanbiedt om het NSB-programma 'om te werken' zodat het voor de r.-k.-Kerk aanvaardbaar wordt.
In oorlogstijd produceert Van Puijenbroek net als de meeste Westbrabantse textielfabrikanten voor de Duitsers - onder het mom van de bescherming van hun werknemers tegen uitzending naar Duitsland. 'Door te werken voor de bezetter kregen de fabrieken de zogenaamde 'S'-status (Sperrbetriebe), wat hun werknemers vrijwaarde voor uitzending naar Duitsland', zo staat te lezen in Goirle 1940-45. Maar dan moeten de arbeiders wel werkweken van minstens 36 uur maken, wat bij de teruglopende bedrijvigheid steeds moeilijker wordt. Van Puijenbroek weet zeventig werknemers te 'vrijwaren' van de Arbeitsdienst door hen te werk te stellen in de ontginning van zijn landgoed. De geschoolde wevers en ververs breken hun ruggen op de harde zandgrond. In wezen verrichten zij dwangarbeid, want bij werkweigering volgt onmiddellijke uitzending naar Duitsland.
Op 15 augustus 1942 worden op het landgoed van Van Puijenbroek vijf gijzelaars uit de kampen Haaren en St. Michielsgestel gefusilleerd. Behalve de boswachter zijn alleen Eduard van Puijenbroek en twee van zijn voorlieden op de hoogte van de plaats van executie, maar zij houden die tot na de oorlog geheim. Hoe de precieze relatie tussen Van Puijenbroek en de bezetter is geweest, is niet bekend. De eerste en enige die ooit een blik in het bedrijfsarchief van Van Puijenbroek heeft mogen werpen, de historicus Thijs Kemmeren, kreeg slechts inzage in de stukken tot mei 1940.
Van opzettelijke collaboratie kan echter geen sprake zijn geweest, want de Van Puijenbroeks onderschrijven sinds 1865 maar één ideologie: het welbegrepen eigenbelang. Als tegen het einde van de oorlog de hongersnood toeslaat, wil Van Puijenbroek nog wel eens aardappelen uitdelen aan de armen, maar niet aan voormalige stakers, ook al is de staking inmiddels veertig jaar geleden. 'Ge wit nog wel van 1904', bijt Eduard hen toe, 'gij krijgt geen eerpels.'
ALS IN DE herfst van 1944 het zuiden van Nederland wordt bevrijd, maakt ook in Tilburg en omstreken de oud-illegaliteit zich op voor de afrekening. Zover komt het echter niet, want het Militair Gezag geeft geen prioriteit aan de economische zuivering. In veel bedrijven krijgt de directie toestemming om het eigen personeel te zuiveren, met als gevolg dat veel 'kleine' NSB'ers en zwarthandelaren worden gearresteerd en veroordeeld, maar niet de 'grote' collaborateurs. Tot woede van de schrijver en verzetsman Anton Coolen, die talloze krantenartikelen en diverse brochures aan het schandaal wijdt, gaan de fabrikanten met goede connecties in de vooroorlogse RKSP veelal vrijuit. De belangrijkste dossiers in de regio Tilburg worden afgedaan door een zuiveringscommissie onder leiding van Van Puijenbroeks oude bekende B.J.M. van Spaendonck.
Van Puijenbroek ontspringt de dans (de concurrent Van Besouw wordt wel veroordeeld wegens collaboratie) en weet onmiddellijk opdrachten van de Gealllieerden in de wacht te slepen. Tussen november 1944 en november 1945 krijgt de firma Canadese legersorders voor een totaal bedrag van f674.000,- in die dagen een fortuin. De oude relaties met Steenberghe (die in mei 1940 met het kabinet naar Londen was gevlucht en vandaar naar Amerika doorgereisd) en De Quay (die ondanks zijn leiderschap van de Nederlandse Unie direct na de bevrijding minister van Oorlog in het 'Brabantse' kabinet-Gerbrandy wordt) zijn daar niet vreemd aan. Vanaf 1945 ruilen en tuitelen de Van Puijenbroeks niet meer op dorpsniveau, maar behoren zij tot de invloedrijkste katholieke families van Nederland.
IN HET REEDS gememoreerde familisme past ook het huwelijk in 1943 van zoon Rudolf met het verre familielid Gertruda Godefrieda 'Tuut' Vroom, van de sinds 1887 gelieerde Vroomen en Dreesmannen. Tuut, tegenwoordig de peetmoeder van de dynastie Van Puijenbroek, was na haar studie theologie in Nijmegen voorbestemd om 'katholiek journalist' te worden, maar de familieplicht riep. Van 1957 tot 1962 zou zij als wethouder de Goirlese gemeentepolitiek domineren.
De familie bestierde in paternalistische trant het hele dagelijks leven, van de ijsclub tot het verpleeghuis en van de harmonie tot het plaatselijke zwembad. Nog altijd zwaait de 75-jarige weduwe de scepter over haar zoons, zij het minder prominent dan voorheen. De Telegraaf besteedt aan Tuuts 'liefdadigheidswerk' nog jaarlijks verplicht een welwillend artikel, maar vermeldt daarin nimmer hoe de familie sinds 1951 het gehele concern in haar greep heeft. Een dergelijke terugblik op de onverkwikkelijke periode van naoorlogse restauratie kan de krant zich niet veroorloven.
Elke krant of uitgeverij heeft wel een zwarte bladzijde in zijn geschiedenis, maar van De Telegraaf kun je je afvragen wanneer hij eigenlijk niet fout is geweest. Welnu, dat was op zijn laatst in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, toen de krant goede contacten onderhield met geallieerde diplomaten en zelfs enige tijd voor Londen en Parijs spioneerde. Eigenaar H.M.C. Holdert was toen nog anti-Duits. Daarna ging het met De Telegraaf bergafwaarts. Na Hitlers Machtübernahme benoemde Holdert zijn Berlijnse correspondent Goedemans tot hoofdredacteur. Met het oog op de gewijzigde verhoudingen werd het Berlijnse correspondentschap overgedragen aan de Haagse bankierszoon met grote Duitse belangen, dr. mr. I.G. ('Gerrie') van Maasdijk. Gerrie van Maasdijk was geen nazi, maar zijn eveneens in Berlijn gevestigde broer Robert wèl. Omdat broerlief de kopij vaak even naliep, kwam de Duitse berichtgeving van De Telegraaf dus reeds in 1933 uit de koker van Joseph Goebbels. Toen Holdert in 1944 overleed, kwam De Telegraaf in handen van zijn drie dochters en zijn zwakbegaafde zoon, de SS'er en Oostfrontstrijder 'Hakkie'.
NA DE BEVRIJDING kreeg de krant een verschijningsverbod voor dertig jaar opgelegd en verviel het aandeel van 'Hakkie' aan de Staat der Nederlanden, maar al in 1949 rolde de krant weer van de persen. De katholieke jurist en politicus L.G. Kortenhorst, die in die tijd onder meer de oorlogsmisdadiger en profiteur Pieter Menten vrijpleitte, had de zwaar gecompromitteerde redactie met succes verdedigd ('goede vaderlanders, fijne mensen, bekwame journalisten') omdat hij de krant beschouwde als alternatief voor de Volkskrant, die te 'zuiver' uit de oorlog was gekomen. Als kamervoorzitter speelde Kortenhorst de redactie onder meer het dossier-Menten toe met de opdracht: verdedig die man - hetgeen geschiedde door middel van insinuerende artikelen in de beste Telegraaf-traditie.
In 1951 wist Kortenhorst de minister van Financiën Lieftinck te overreden om het staatsaandeel voor de spotprijs van f120.000,- van de hand te doen. Ook de noodlijdende gezusters Holdert wilden voor die prijs van hun aandelen af. Kortenhorst aarzelde geen moment.

I GO FOR THE UNNATURAL DISASTER

In the early 1990s when I had my 'awakening' - the top of my head blew off and I didn't know what planet I was on for around three months - I began to talk publicly, and infamously in the UK, about enormous geological and weather disasters that were to come.
My mind was suddenly bombarded with information about these weather extremes and making sense of it was very difficult. At the time if you had asked me my name I would have had to check. But the theme was certainly clear: the world was going to experience fantastic geological and weather catastrophes. I met several psychics in that same period who continued this theme. Obviously, the tsunami of late 2004 and Hurricane Katrina this week brought this all back to mind. Today I was flicking through my book, Truth Vibrations, written in 1990, and found this:
'We have had some highly destructive winds in Britain and Europe in recent years and we can expect the power and frequency of hurricanes to increase. A [psychic] message said there would be a severe hurricane around the Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans.’
I also found this quote from one of the psychics:
'Taking oil from the seabed is destabilising the inner earth. The centre of the earth will move and the poles will change. The sea spirits will rise and stop men taking oil. The sea will reclaim the land and humans will see they cannot do these terrible things. They cannot abuse the elements. They have to be treated with respect.'

There was much more along the same lines and, of course, 'natural' disasters, tsunamis, and incredible winds, etc., are a common prediction among many strands of 'New Age' thinking and the prophecies of native peoples. Winds of extraordinary power are one of the threads mentioned throughout Truth Vibrations. We are also now seeing extremes of rain in some regions and severe droughts in others. In the book, quoting psychic sources in 1990, I wrote that ...
'... in some regions there will be a lot of rain and flooding while in others ... there will be new areas of drought as the earth empties her deepest caverns to prepare for the new flows of energy.'
I didn't know the precise timescale for these predictions and I assumed in my awakening mind that it would happen sooner than it has. Nor am I saying here – ‘See I predicted it all’ - because in terms of the details I was quoting psychics. What I was personally getting was the general picture, not specifics. The psychics were giving me that and far from all that they predicted has happened - at least yet. But the theme of vibrational change, weather and geological extremes, and a spiritual awakening, was a constant one and continues to be so.
I have long thought that the weather changes clearly gathering apace every year are not the result of human pollution - 'the greenhouse effect' - but of a vibrational quickening that is warming the atmosphere and changing the energy matrix of the planet. The very title of that book, Truth Vibrations, was inspired by this theme. In the end, of course, it is all an illusion, but I am speaking of the level of the collective illusion that our five senses currently experience.
My astrophysicist friend, Giuliana Conforto, writes in her excellent books of how an increase in vibration brings with it a corresponding increase in temperature and I am sure this is what, at least in part, ‘global warming’ is really about. Pollution is obviously highly undesirable, but I would say it has been used as the villain to, appropriately, smokescreen what is really happening.
This vibrational quickening is also the trigger for the awakening of vast numbers of people in recent years as they snap out of the collective trance. This effect will continue to gather pace, as will the changes in global weather patterns. Everything is an expression, a mirror, of everything else and climate change is a manifestation of change on many other levels.
BUT …
All that said, there is another way of looking at the Asian tsunami and the catastrophic hurricane in the United States. The key way the public is misled is through the suppression of knowledge – not least the knowledge of what is technologically possible. For instance, if I have technology that can affect the weather and you don’t know this technology exists you will, of course, assume that every weather extreme is a ‘natural’ disaster. But the fact is that the technological means to manipulate the weather has been around for decades.
As I have been saying and writing all these years, the Illuminati plan is to create maximum chaos to instil maximum fear to create a sense of maximum dependency on authority. They want multi-levelled chaos to justify the imposition of marshal law, ‘holding’ (concentration) camps, centralised dictatorship, and the Orwellian global state in all its forms. The engineered terrorism and the ‘war on terrorism’ are, in this regard, part of the same agenda that includes crashing the world economy, bringing the United States into conflict with China, and ‘natural’ catastrophes like New Orleans. The idea is to create so much upheaval and chaos that a centralised global government with its own army etc., is seen as the only way to bring, to quote the Freemasons’ motto, ‘Order out of Chaos’.
In terms of earthquakes and hurricanes they certainly have the means. Nikola Tesla, who invented or discovered, radio, television, radar, neon light, alternating current, particle beams, among much else, was able to manipulate the weather in the early part of the 20th century. He was well known to police in Greenwich Village responding to complaints from terrified neighbours about the lightening bolts originating from the top of his building. The lightning bolts in many early horror films were produced with Tesla technology.
Over the decades weather ‘modification’ has developed to an ever advanced potential for controlling patterns and triggering specific events. In 1997 the U.S. Secretary of Defense, William Cohen, told a conference at the University of Georgia:
‘Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves. So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations and it's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.’

Oh please. ‘Terrorists’ can do that, Mr. Cohen, and yet government agencies and the miltary with multi billion dollar annual budgets can’t do the same?? What Cohen was revealing there is the extent to which the technology is now available to create earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes that can target specific locations. Could the secret government have created Hurricane Katrina to target New Orleans and those southern states? Yes.
Did they? I would say yes again.
Who benefits from Hurricane Katrina? Anyone who wants to add to the fear and chaos that ‘justifies’ the imposition of ever more centralised, military-controlled, law enforcement and anyone who wants to dramatically increase the price of fuel and devastate the world economy. THE REAL REASON FOR FEMA
It is clear that the response to the unbelievable carnage and suffering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina has been pathetic. This is not surprising when you look at the real agenda behind the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA. The lack of response to the suffering in those southern states can now be understood when you realise that FEMA is not there to mount such a response. I have spoken with survivors of Hurricane Andrew, which struck South Dade County, Florida, in 1992 and anyone who wants to know what the world will be like under organisations like FEMA and their masters should listen to what they say. The horror stories they tell about the actions of FEMA beggar belief. Far from helping the hundreds of thousands of homeless and injured victims, FEMA cordoned off the area and left the people to fend for them selves. They were given no food, no water, no medical supplies, no shelter and no help whatsoever when the disaster struck. One of the victims was K.T. “Please Sir, I need medical help,� I begged, barely able to speak. The officer sitting behind the wheel sighed heavily. He turned his head away from me and gazed out his windshield. The other three men in the car quietly looked at me. “Please Sir, I need to get to a hospital,� I begged franticly. The officer took his time about reaching over and switching off the engine. With another sigh, he slowly opened the door and climbed out. He then proceeded to close the door and stood there with his legs astride.
“Lady, do me a favour,� he answered. “Find yourself a piece of paper and a pencil. Write down your name and social security number next to the phone number of your nearest living relative. Tuck the piece of paper in your pocket so tomorrow, when I find your body, I’ll know who to contact.�
“No! No!� I cried out. “You don’t understand. I need to get to a hospital. I’ve been badly injured.�
“No! You’re the one that doesn’t understand,� he hissed back.
“With that, he reached over to his holster and took out his gun. He grabbed me, forcing me up against the side of the car, and proceeded to put the barrel of the gun against my temple. I heard the hammer cock. From the position he had pushed me into, I could see directly into the car. The man sitting in the front passenger seat looked away from me immediately, glancing down to the floor. The two passengers in the back turned their heads quickly, staring out the window on the other side of the car. My son and the other survivor watched as the officer had pulled back the hammer on his gun. So shocked out of their minds by what they were witnessing, neither one could move!
“You don’t belong here!� the officer growled, pressing the barrel into the side of my head. “Now you get the hell outta here before I blow away your ass!�
“He shoved my face into the car window and then released me. Someone grabbed me from behind and whirled me around so fast I didn’t have time to think! Before I knew it, I was being thrown over a shoulder. My rescuer took off running as fast as he could! I caught a brief glimpse of my son running next to me. With one gigantic leap, he and the survivor who carried me down behind a pile of debris. All three of us crashed on top of each other in one tangled up heap.
“I’ll shoot your damn asses!� the officer’s voice rang out.�
This is the mentality behind FEMA, the US military, the Office of Homeland “Security� and leaders of government. That mentality would not orchestrate what happened on September 11th to advance its agenda? The official death toll of Hurricane Andrew was 26, but K.T. Frankovich says she saw at least 71 bodies taken away from one small area alone. She estimates the dead to have numbered thousands. But how many people know that? Only those involved and no one is listening to them. As always, the media told us what the official sources told them and they had no inclination to investigate further because it’s easier that way. When you consider how 8,230 mobile homes and 9,140 apartments disappeared in the wake of 200-300 miles an hour winds, it is obvious that the official death toll of 26 is insane. K.T. Frankovich recalls:
“The National Guard along with the Coast Guard, the Army, FEMA, Metro Dade Police, state police and local police removed dead bodies and body parts as quickly as possible during those first ten days of the aftermath. Horrified survivors watched as both uniformed and civilian-clothed men searched the rubble and filled body bags, which they then stacked in military vehicles or huge refrigerator trucks normally used to transport food, only to drive off and leave the stranded injured to fend for them selves.
“Not until I managed to escape the aftermath did I discover that the ‘thermo-king’ sections of these same refrigerator trucks, jam packed with wall to wall body bags, ended up being stored at Card Sound Navy Base, located in an isolated area just above the Florida Keys. The inside temperature was kept cool by portable generators until the bodies were either incinerated or just plain dumped into huge open grave pits.
“Those working on the body pick up operation were forced to take what is known as the Oath of Sworn Secrecy, which is strictly enforced by the government. Many of them plunged into shock, once exposed to the ghastly devastation and countless mutilated bodies. The horrors were way beyond human comprehension. I can vouch for this, as I accidentally stepped on the severed hand of a young child when I initially crawled out of the debris, only to witness shortly thereafter two dead teenagers and the decapitated body of a baby girl.�
K.T. says that when she lectured at the Clearwater Convention in Florida in 1999, a man in the audience introduced himself as Chief Petty Officer Roy Howard and said he had spent 9 weeks on active duty working in South Dade County amid the devastation. He said he learned that at least 5,280 people had died and that the bodies had been ‘confiscated’ by the National Guard and secretly disposed of in incinerators in a joint operation with FEMA. At least another 1,500 bodies were ‘confiscated’ from lakes and other water. This is the America that the population doesn’t see, but it soon will if people don’t wake up fast. FEMA, the organisation behind all this and with all those fascist powers to take over America, is a 100% Illuminati creation funded by the profits from the CIA-Bush family drug operation. It is no surprise to learn, then, that it was during Father George’s time at the CIA and in the White House between 1980 and 1992 that this “emergency management� network was established in the name of fighting terrorism and … drug trafficking! You have to admire their cheek if nothing else.

They want multi-levelled chaos to justify the imposition of marshal law, ‘holding’ (concentration) camps, centralised dictatorship, and the Orwellian global state in all its forms. The engineered terrorism and the ‘war on terrorism’ are, in this regard, part of the same agenda that includes crashing the world economy, bringing the United States into conflict with China, and ‘natural’ catastrophes like New Orleans. The idea is to create so much upheaval and chaos that a centralised global government with its own army etc., is seen as the only way to bring, to quote the Freemasons’ motto, ‘Order out of Chaos’.
In terms of earthquakes and hurricanes they certainly have the means. Nikola Tesla, who invented or discovered, radio, television, radar, neon light, alternating current, particle beams, among much else, was able to manipulate the weather in the early part of the 20th century. He was well known to police in Greenwich Village responding to complaints from terrified neighbours about the lightening bolts originating from the top of his building. The lightning bolts in many early horror films were produced with Tesla technology.
Over the decades weather ‘modification’ has developed to an ever advanced potential for controlling patterns and triggering specific events. In 1997 the U.S. Secretary of Defense, William Cohen, told a conference at the University of Georgia:

THE REAL REASON FOR FEMA
It is clear that the response to the unbelievable carnage and suffering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina has been pathetic. This is not surprising when you look at the real agenda behind the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA. So, why are they building them? FEMA has around 3,600 employees, and yet only 60 work on natural disasters or prepare plans in case of nuclear attack. What are the rest doing?’

The lack of response to the suffering in those southern states can now be understood when you realise that FEMA is not there to mount such a response. Reporters from the world media can get in and out of there, so can the military, but they can’t do the same with food and water?? I wrote in … And The Truth Shall Set You Free:

Oliver North, of Iran-Contra fame, was heavily involved in the creation of FEMA, so say no more. We have all seen the scale of suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but away from the mainstream media it will be far worse. This was another highly suspect hurricane and what you read here in this extract from the book is what will now be happening amid the devastation of Katrina:

I have spoken with survivors of Hurricane Andrew, which struck South Dade County, Florida, in 1992 and anyone who wants to know what the world will be like under organisations like FEMA and their masters should listen to what they say. The horror stories they tell about the actions of FEMA beggar belief. Far from helping the hundreds of thousands of homeless and injured victims, FEMA cordoned off the area and left the people to fend for them selves. They were given no food, no water, no medical supplies, no shelter and no help whatsoever when the disaster struck. One of the victims was K.T. Frankovich who suffered serious injuries in the hurricane. She tells of her horrific experiences in her book, Where Heavens Meet. About three days after the hurricane had devastated the region, she said that a long line of police cars, about 12 to 15, arrived in her area. Each car was driven by a man dressed in a dark police uniform and they had three other plain clothes men riding as passengers, she said. K.T. had a broken jaw, eight teeth knocked out and huge pieces of glass embedded in her body that only a scalpel could remove. She begged this FEMA convoy for help and this was the exchange that followed, as described by K.T. in Where Heavens Meet.
“Please Sir, I need medical help,� I begged, barely able to speak. The officer sitting behind the wheel sighed heavily. He turned his head away from me and gazed out his windshield. The other three men in the car quietly looked at me. “Please Sir, I need to get to a hospital,� I begged franticly. The officer took his time about reaching over and switching off the engine. With another sigh, he slowly opened the door and climbed out. He then proceeded to close the door and stood there with his legs astride.
“Lady, do me a favour,� he answered. “Find yourself a piece of paper and a pencil. Write down your name and social security number next to the phone number of your nearest living relative. Tuck the piece of paper in your pocket so tomorrow, when I find your body, I’ll know who to contact.�
“No! No!� I cried out. “You don’t understand. I need to get to a hospital. I’ve been badly injured.�
“No! You’re the one that doesn’t understand,� he hissed back.
“With that, he reached over to his holster and took out his gun. He grabbed me, forcing me up against the side of the car, and proceeded to put the barrel of the gun against my temple. I heard the hammer cock. From the position he had pushed me into, I could see directly into the car. The man sitting in the front passenger seat looked away from me immediately, glancing down to the floor. The two passengers in the back turned their heads quickly, staring out the window on the other side of the car. My son and the other survivor watched as the officer had pulled back the hammer on his gun. So shocked out of their minds by what they were witnessing, neither one could move!
“You don’t belong here!� the officer growled, pressing the barrel into the side of my head. “Now you get the hell outta here before I blow away your ass!�
“He shoved my face into the car window and then released me. Someone grabbed me from behind and whirled me around so fast I didn’t have time to think! Before I knew it, I was being thrown over a shoulder. My rescuer took off running as fast as he could! I caught a brief glimpse of my son running next to me. With one gigantic leap, he and the survivor who carried me down behind a pile of debris. All three of us crashed on top of each other in one tangled up heap.
“I’ll shoot your damn asses!� the officer’s voice rang out.�
This is the mentality behind FEMA, the US military, the Office of Homeland “Security� and leaders of government. That mentality would not orchestrate what happened on September 11th to advance its agenda? The official death toll of Hurricane Andrew was 26, but K.T. Frankovich says she saw at least 71 bodies taken away from one small area alone. She estimates the dead to have numbered thousands. But how many people know that? Only those involved and no one is listening to them. As always, the media told us what the official sources told them and they had no inclination to investigate further because it’s easier that way. When you consider how 8,230 mobile homes and 9,140 apartments disappeared in the wake of 200-300 miles an hour winds, it is obvious that the official death toll of 26 is insane. K.T. Frankovich recalls:
“The National Guard along with the Coast Guard, the Army, FEMA, Metro Dade Police, state police and local police removed dead bodies and body parts as quickly as possible during those first ten days of the aftermath. Horrified survivors watched as both uniformed and civilian-clothed men searched the rubble and filled body bags, which they then stacked in military vehicles or huge refrigerator trucks normally used to transport food, only to drive off and leave the stranded injured to fend for them selves.
“Not until I managed to escape the aftermath did I discover that the ‘thermo-king’ sections of these same refrigerator trucks, jam packed with wall to wall body bags, ended up being stored at Card Sound Navy Base, located in an isolated area just above the Florida Keys. The inside temperature was kept cool by portable generators until the bodies were either incinerated or just plain dumped into huge open grave pits.
“Those working on the body pick up operation were forced to take what is known as the Oath of Sworn Secrecy, which is strictly enforced by the government. Many of them plunged into shock, once exposed to the ghastly devastation and countless mutilated bodies. The horrors were way beyond human comprehension. I can vouch for this, as I accidentally stepped on the severed hand of a young child when I initially crawled out of the debris, only to witness shortly thereafter two dead teenagers and the decapitated body of a baby girl.�
K.T. says that when she lectured at the Clearwater Convention in Florida in 1999, a man in the audience introduced himself as Chief Petty Officer Roy Howard and said he had spent 9 weeks on active duty working in South Dade County amid the devastation. He said he learned that at least 5,280 people had died and that the bodies had been ‘confiscated’ by the National Guard and secretly disposed of in incinerators in a joint operation with FEMA. At least another 1,500 bodies were ‘confiscated’ from lakes and other water. This is the America that the population doesn’t see, but it soon will if people don’t wake up fast. FEMA, the organisation behind all this and with all those fascist powers to take over America, is a 100% Illuminati creation funded by the profits from the CIA-Bush family drug operation. It is no surprise to learn, then, that it was during Father George’s time at the CIA and in the White House between 1980 and 1992 that this “emergency management� network was established in the name of fighting terrorism and … drug trafficking! 'They would never do that'. Well, ‘they’ would do that and are doing it almost daily. The Big Lie is one of their core techniques for mass manipulation of the global population. This is what Adolf Hitler wrote in his 1925 autobiography Mein Kampf:
"n the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. This is precisely what we have seen since 9/11 and with other engineered ‘terrorist’ attacks like the London bombings. They can’t tell the truth – like ‘the forces controlling me were behind 9/11 because they wanted to frighten the people into giving their freedoms away.’ Or, ‘we are going to invade Iraq because it is part of a master plan to control the entire Middle East for the benefit of those who control me – we also want Iran, Syria and a list of others, too.’
Instead they LIE. They say that 19 Muslim terrorists did the impossible on 9/11 and so the war on terror was born – born of the BIG LIE. They invent ‘weapons of mass destruction’ for the excuse to invade Iraq knowing all along that they would not find them. De Duitser von Bülow diende in het derde kabinet van Helmuth Schmitt (1980-1982), de Brit Meacher in de regering van Tony Blair (1997-2003). Onafhankelijk van elkaar onderzochten beide heren de aanslagen op het World Trade Center en Pentagon, en de oorlog tegen het terrorisme die hieruit volgde.
Zowel Meacher als Von Bülow komen met opmerkelijke conclusies. Volgens hen is de oorlog tegen het terrorisme heel iets anders dan de regering Bush ons wil doen geloven. En kwamen de aanslagen eigenlijk wel goed van pas.
