Man vs Machine (spanish variant)
Man vs Machine (spanish variant)
Hi everyone,
It has been going for sometime now a match in the spanish checkers variant between grand master Fernando Silva (Morona) from Peru vs Profound (running with 6 threads on an Intel core i7 3960x), so far 46 games played and the last game was very impressive by Fernando. Only at move 29...16-12 he lost the game.

Fernando Silva is a really strong player in this variant.
Profound is being operated by Herson Guier from Costa Rica and author of the blog on spanish checkers:

best regards,
Alvaro

Congratulations for this match!
How close to perfection is Profound? Your comment on game 46 seems to suggest that you know the exact result for every move.
I'm assuming that you described your program in this excellent post from last year: https://www.game-ai-forum.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=75
What is your experience with NNs? In particular, I'm interested in their speed relative to patterns that we use in 10x10. As I understand, you don't use one of those huge CNNs we see in the news (no pun intended), but a compromise?
Fabien.

Hi Fabien,
my program is far from perfect as you would expect, one way to see that is in the quality of moves in the opening phase. Not allways it makes the strongest move in the opening phase. Other than that I'm pretty satisfied by the results Profound obtained against Triturator 5 and against Aurora.
You can check the results against these programs at:
http://damasclasicas.blogspot.pt/
There seems to be a confusion, and with good reason.
The thing is that there are 2 programmers with the name Álvaro, and both program spanish checkers engines. Can you believe that?
I'm Álvaro Cardoso author of Profound, from Portugal.
The other one is Álvaro Begué, a programmer from Spain, I don't know his program. The link you posted is from him.
No I do not use CNNs on my engine, it's an interesting topic, but I'm pretty satisfied with my hand written eval I have made during many years.
best regards,
Alvaro Cardoso

Many thanks for you interest in Profound.Krzysztof Grzelak wrote:Hi Alvaro.

I'm sorry my friend, but the program is not yet finished.
As soon as I finish it I'll contact you, if you drop me an email at deep.profound@gmail.com
best regards,
Alvaro
Note: Please keep in mind Profound was designed to be an heavily threaded engine, so you only make the best of it if you have a cpu with many cores, at least 8 real cores. The new AMD Ryzen 1800x is a very good option.

Absolutely! You can't make this stuff up even on April 1stAlvaro wrote:The thing is that there are 2 programmers with the name Álvaro, and both program spanish checkers engines. Can you believe that?
What makes it "heavily threaded"?Note: Please keep in mind Profound was designed to be an heavily threaded engine, so you only make the best of it if you have a cpu with many cores, at least 8 real cores. The new AMD Ryzen 1800x is a very good option.

Re: Man vs Machine (spanish variant)
I'm not a native english speaker, so I may not have expressed myself well. What makes it "heavily threaded"?
I was merely saying the program is very strong with 8 threads.
Here in portugal it is not common at all having a 6 core core i7.
People who have quad cores are usually from the core 2 familly of cpus.
I work at a school and the best pcs there are quad core core 2.
My smp search is YBW.
best regards,
Alvaro
