Herman Hoogland (1891-1955) became world champion in 1912. He designed an 8x8 variant where the king can also capture orthogonally, but only an enemy king (not a man). Hoogland Checkers became very popular after WWII, but has since been forgotten. The advantage is that two kings win against one.

Imagine that we instead use a 10x10 board and reduce the orthogonal capture, so that the king can only capture an enemy king from standstill (i.e., not later in the capture sequence). This king is only minimally stronger. Nevertheless, two kings win against one. Reformed International Draughts could solve the draw crisis.
