Checkers variants

Post by MLWi » Wed Feb 11, 2015 11:25

Hello! (I'm new.) I have implemented seven traditional variants of checkers for Zillions. These have rules similar to International Draughts, in which pieces are allowed to capture backwards. Kings (Dames) are "long". The variants are: Canadian Checkers, Sri Lankan Checkers, Damii (Ghanaian draughts), Brazilian Checkers, German Checkers (Pool Checkers), Jamaican Checkers, and Czech Checkers. (Mind you, Zillions is quite strong in checkers variants.)

I have also implemented Frisian draughts, here:

(Although there already exists a Zillions standard implementation of Pool checkers and Frisian draughts, it was necessary to create these anew, because all Zillions's implementations with "long Dames" (or "long Kings") are defective. The Dame will erroneously continue a finished capture sequence in case two enemy pieces are positioned on the same diagonal, and the Dame captures from between them. Moreover, the rules for Frisian draughts hadn't been implemented correctly.)

I have now added Russian Checkers, or Draughts-64, as the International Draughts Federation (here) calls it. In Russian checkers, a Man will promote to Dame during a capture sequence, if it makes an intermediate landing on a promotion square.
