"Shortly after Sijbrands defeated him in the World Championship, Andreiko died under mysterious circumstances, and Sijbrands has harbored a vague feeling of guilt ever since."
Why? I understand Andreiko was murdered in his apartment in Riga. What circumstances were mysterious and why would Sijbrands feel guilty?

Nobody seems to know exactly who murdered Andris Andreiko and why, that's what's causing the mystery.mman wrote:According to this:

Sijbrands said he feels a bit guilty because Andreiko was more or less degraded in the Soviet Union after the lost match against Sijbrands in October 1973. Andreiko was murdered in March 1976. There's still a lot of speculation around the murder of Andreiko.

Hmmm. So what's the speculation? That he was murdered by the KGB for losing the match? You'd think Boris Spassky, who lost to Fischer in chess not long before, would have been a much bigger fish. Yet Spassky is still with us.Hanco Elenbaas wrote:mman wrote:According to this:

There has been varied speculation. I've heard the director of the movie say all kinds of sensational nonsense after the premiere of his film during Amsterdam Documentay Film Festival, December 2009. It doesn't matter, especially when I don't know whom I'm talking to.mman wrote:Hmmm. So what's the speculation? That he was murdered by the KGB for losing the match?
