Raymond St. Fort

This is Raymond St. Fort, likely the strongest player ever from Haiti.
He wrote four checker books, Dam-Karate, Beauty 'n' originality, L'Evolution du Jeu de dames en HaÃƒÂ¯ti and Documents pour l'histoire.

St. Fort was born in Independence City, Haiti in 1932. He lives in the USA since the seventees. He was champion of HaÃƒÂ¯ti and U.S. Titleholder.

There is a lot to be said about the other ethnicities in Africa. Of course, there are Arab Africans (in the Saharan region), Indian Africans (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, the Seychelles, Mauritius), and White Africans (Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia).

Typically when one says "African," they are referring to ethnicity more than a nationality. If someone describes to you, "She's African," you may think of a Black African if you had no other information. Maybe it is different in Europe, but when someone describes to me someone as "European," I personally do not think of someone from Africa even though there are many Africans and Arabs throughout Europe. I believe these are classifications that are widely understood. It is not much different here in America except ethnicity is much more a dominant factor in determining one's identity.

I'm not sure what the case is in draughts, but there was a time when national chess teams in South Africa were represented entirely by white settlers. It was not because there were not strong Black players. South Africa had two federations... the country was later banned from international competitions because of sanctions.

In Mauritius, I did a story on the national team and consisted entirely of Asians and Indians. The team captain (an ethnic Chinese) told me, "Certainly we are African." I believe we may understand the difference. http://www.thechessdrum.net/historicmom ... aug03.html

I don't believe this socio-ethnic debate is very important in terms of this discussion. We are sharing information about players of African descent and there has been no confusion thus far. This thread has certainly gotten me very excited about draughts and many of my site visitors have already made comments about Baba Sy and sent me links including one about Suki King of Barbados.

I'm grateful for this information. It is so inspiring and perhaps this is the kind of information needed to help promote our sports.

Dominica... ah yes... English-speaking. Thanks for the correction. I suppose I had in mind the French legacy. I know a number of people from Dominica including a professorial colleague. Of course the Dominican Republic on Hispanola is very different from Dominica indeed!

It is really interesting how these board sports have traveled the span of time and how certain regions have taken to them at different levels. I'm still intrigued by the apparent inverse relationship between chess and draughts on certain parts of the globe. Africa is a good example.
