Does anybody know this game???

Post by FESSOR » Thu Jan 12, 2012 09:54

Hi

Down in Cape Town, South Africa we play a game very similar to draughts. Most of the rules are exactly the same except that each side gets 42 pieces and is played on a 14x14 board. We call it "dumm" or "long drafts"

Capture is compulsory
Must capture maximum amount of pieces possible otherwise penalty of 1 piece
Can capture backward or forward
Crown can skip as much blocks when moving freely or when capturing, so capable of cleaning out the whole board if oponents pieces are laying scattered all over the board.

The game is taken very seriously by those who play it and if you are good at it then you are very well respected and well known in the "dumm" community.

I would just like to know if there are other parts of the world where this game is played?
Tried searching on the net but nothing!

I've never heard about it.
You can see here, there are a lot of variants:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draughts
but the one you describe isn't mentioned there.

Maybe you could make and publish some photos here? I'm sure it will be interesting for many people.

If I understand you well the starting position is as such:

Isn't it?

Nice.
You can post pictures here as attachments.
Or use some external photohosting like http://flickr.com or http://imageshack.us/ and post here only the URL of pictures.
If the rules of your game are equal to the international draughts (10x10) it will mean that
a) the best players 10x10 will be also very strong in your game as there are more similarity then differences in the tactic and the strategy
b) players 14x14 can adapt quite easy to the 10x10 game which is much more played all over the world.

Here yellow wins as purple has given up. Notice how yellow still has its back row fully in tact with a crown in the centre of the board. Its considered to be humiliating when someone beats you without utilising their back row!

This is your picture in some smaller size.
Otherwise it spoils the view of the webpage.
I will replace the picture in your post with this one and delete the "big one"" and this post later.

Very interesting indeed. Plese make some pictures of people playing this kind of draughts.
I'm sure it will be interesting for most of participants of this forum.

I think it is a little bigger. 14x14, not 14x13.

The guys who take this game very serious.

The one in the middle is the current Champion. One on the right is second and one on the left is third.

They will do anything for a tough game. And i think they are even wlling to play internationally!!
