History of 10x10 draughts

Post by mman » Mon Jan 17, 2005 00:33

Is there a good source on the net for a history of 10x10 draughts prior to the World Championships in 1948?

I found a French site which says the game first appeared at the beginning of the 18th century, but I'm unable to find anything about famous players and matches prior to the beginning of organized world championships.

In chess, "straight" checkers, go, shogi and other games I can find out about famous stakes matches, challenge matches, etc., long before there were formal organizations, but not for 10x10 draughts.

Can anyone help me?

Have a look here http://fmjd.org/old/Summary/earlyhistory.html ( a page from the old FMJD site ).
I guess that also many games since end of 19th century are available in Turbodambase ( http://www.turbodambase.com )

translating Arie van der Stoep, Over de herkomst van het woord damspel (About the origin of the word Damspel). Arie wrote:

(this checkervariant, also called international checkers, probably originated in the Netherlands, in the 17th century. The rules are first described in the 18th century.)

Dear Mr. Mman, (What does that mean?)

Why don't you try www.draughtshistory.nl as mentioned in a posting lower down the list.

Yours sincerely, John Reade.
