A new computer tournament ?

Post by TAILLE » Tue Sep 15, 2009 19:34

Hi,

I am happy to inform you about a project for a new computer tournament. It would take place in Cannes (south of France) in parallel of the well known Cannes tournament for humans.
This computer tournament have to be organised between Friday 5 March and Sunday 7 March 2010. It can the last one, two or three days and I am consulted to define the rules for this tournament.
My first idea is to take 2 days in order to make an all round tournament, each program playing one or more games against each opponent, depending of the number of participants.

In order to help you to come in Cannes it is highy probable that Cannes city will offer the accomodation so that you have only to take into account for you the travelling and the restoration.

Do you think this project is a good idea ?

Who is interested by participating ?

Note : for your information the traditional french open tournament will take place as usual in north of France at the end of April 2010.

Hi Gerard,

First of all congratulations on your Dutch title! I read your report on the French forum. Do you have the complete table of results (not just the points totals)?

This tournament in Cannes would be great of course. Perhaps it would also be nice to arrange an exhibition match of the human winner vs the best computer?

The complete table of results will be available tomorrow and the games a little later.
Yes I understand that a match between the program winner and the human winner would be very interested for a lot of spectators but we all know that it is quite impossible in parctise for several reasons :
1) The winner of the humans tournament is typically a professionnal player who cannot accept to play without being paid
2) A strong player as nothing to gain by playing against a strong program : if he wins then it will be simply concluded that the program level was not yet at the level of the top players, and if he loses everybody in the draugths world will keep in mind that this grandmaster had lost again the top program!

In chess such game was possible only due to the fact that a great sponsor (IBM) put a lot of money on the table

Hi Gerard,

I think Cannes would be an excellent site for a computer draughts tournament. Count me as interested in attending. I also agree that a 2-day format would be best.
