Hi Bert,
I’m sorry I do not understand. You and Damy will not play?
Mark
Damy probably won't play. Bert Tuyt and Damage will be there. The 12th Computer Olympiad is in Amsterdam from June 11th up to June 18.
See: http://www.icga.org/

Maybe some strong programs from Russia will be present too, http://www.shashki.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-857.html , so it would be nice if you will be able to defend the USA in Amsterdam!

DAMY and Gérard TAILLE won't be there in Amsterdam. On the forum of the French Draughts Federation Gérard TAILLE writes that he possibly will join the festival in Culemborg end 2007:

seen a fully-operational program on internet that plays perfectly. Moreover,
we are willing to host more games, such as Ataxx, Dvonn, Mediocrity, Onyx,
Tamsk, TwixT and Zèrtz but we do not know of the existence of adequately
playing programs. We are awaiting suggestions and proposals of programmers
before we include them in the official list given above.

For each game a tournament will take place provided that at least two
programs enter the tournament for that particular game. Gold, Silver and
Bronze medals will be awarded to the leading programs in each tournament.

The Tournament Director of the WCCC and Computer Olympiad will be: H.J. van
den Herik.

The rules of the WCCC and Computer Olympiad will be soon published.

A participant is expected to be ICGA member (? 40).

Deadline early registration: May 21, 2007. Registration after May 21, 2007
will double the entry fee.

"Amateur": programmers who have no commercial interest in their program, and
are not professional game programmers. Applications for amateur
classification must supply information to justify their claim.

"Semi-professional": Any program submitted by an employee or associate from
a games-programming company. The program's name must not be derived from or
similar to a commercial product.

"Professional": A program whose name is the same as or derived from a
commercial product.

I did not write a draughts program. But I enjoy Draughts and watching the computer play.
Computer translation is still bad. So it would be nice if people posted in english then more people could follow this forum. Thank you.

Damy is under development

Post by TAILLE » Fri Apr 27, 2007 23:34

Hello,

For your information Damy is still under development. I worked hard to build a rather optimised 6 pieces endgame database and I am working on the 7 pieces endgame database. The challenge is very interesting and I hope to have some results (a significant part of this database) before the end of this 2007 year.
In parallel I have also to improve the strategies used by Damy and I have to teach Damy new stratégies.
A lot of work for me !!!

Hi Gérard,
Damy is very strong today. You won 9 out of 10 games against strong programs. How would you rate your program in comparison to the Draughts world champion?

programm and world champion

Post by TAILLE » Sat Apr 28, 2007 10:19

Hi Mark,
Of course I am very happy with the result obtained by Damy in this french open tournament, but, as you prefectly know, the best programs (Damage, Flits, Truus, Buggy) were not present. The next step for will be for me to participate at the Culemborg tournament at the end of 2007 where I hope the best programs will be present.

Concerning a comparison with the Draughts world champion I am not very sure that a match would be a good idea. I think that some of the best players in the world have sometimes a training session with a program and they know perfectly the level of these programms (generally very strong in the endgame and in the tactical area and not so strong in the middle game strategy).
For me the worse senario would be a win of the program in a match with the best player in the world. It could not be good for the Draughts game itself !!! Who will be then motivated to play such game ?
My view is that competions between computers is another activity (very interesting as far as I am concerned) and my opinion is that computers may help (strong) players to become stronger and stronger.

Gérard
