Re: The Unofficial World Championships Of Computer Programs In International Draughts Rapid 2020

Post by warpspeed » Sat Apr 11, 2020 07:24

I was wondering about "Rapid" since the time control seems more in line with the definition of "Blitz" of the FMJD.

From there on page 60 of the Annexes :
Annex 6
Rapid and blitz games

1. Definition
  • A game is considered accelerated when the time that is allowed for each player for the
whole game is not more than 30 minutes.
    • There are two categories of accelerated games.
      1. The rapid game, where each player is allowed a time between 15 and 30 minutes
inclusive for the whole game, or when electronic clocks and the Fischer system are
used between 15 and 30 minutes for the first 60 moves.

      2. The blitz game, where each player is allowed a time between 5 and 15 minutes
inclusive for the whole game, or when electronic clocks and the Fischer system are
used between 5 and 15 minutes for the first 60 moves.

However, when looking at the definition of Rapid and Blitz for chess of the FIDE it is indeed Rapid.

There it says :
  1. Rate of Play
    • 1.1
      • For a game to be rated each player must have the following minimum periods in which to complete all the moves:
        • for a rapid game all the moves must be made in a fixed time of more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes for each player; or the time allotted + 60 times any increment is of more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes for each player;
        • for a blitz game all the moves must be made in a fixed time of more than 3 minutes but not more than 10 minutes for each player; or the time allotted + 60 times any increment is of more than 3 minutes but not more than 10 minutes for each player.
So with a time control of 5 minutes with 6 seconds incremental time for each move one gets for 60 moves 11 minutes in total which exceeds 10 minutes.

warpspeed should be "Rapid" not "Blitz".

We have the same confusion as last year. There is no increment, as far as the programs are concerned. Not all programs support this option. So the programs are set to play 85 moves in 5 minutes.
The increment of 6 seconds per move is only there on the external draughts clock, that is used to show the live audience an approximation of the time used by the programs. The operator has 6 seconds to make each move on the board. See also http://www.uwccpi2020.draughtsprograms. ... ation.html.

I think you are right though warpspeed should be "Blitz". These 6 seconds confused me.

Thanks for clarifying. So then with 5 minutes for more than 60 moves it certainly is in the Blitz range definition.

As I already told Krzysztof, I decided to withdraw Maximus from the unofficial world championship 2020. For the people who have Maximus this means I am revoking the rights to let it play in computer tournaments, matches, exhibition games, etc. I trust you will all respect this. Krzysztof, please remove Maximus and all information from the tournament website. I wish you good luck with the tournament.

In my opinion an independent expert should investigate the claim that Edeon Sport is using Scan 2's eval. But that is up to the community.

Hi Jan.

Can I ask you to reconsider further participation in the tournament? Man sometimes makes hasty decisions, and later regret it. Please think about Jan and I will not remove the program from my site for the next two weeks. Please remember that this is just fun on my part. I am asking you to think about my request. I will be feeling very nicely and pleasantly to play with Maximus program in tournament.

I am greeting
Krzysztof Grzelak

Begin this year I promised Krzysztof a new version for his tournament, gave it yesterday.
Considering some posts I saw I like to mention that Sjende Blyn is not based upon Scan, nor any other program.

Because they extended my leave. I decided to play 2 rounds of the tournament a day. The tournament will run from September 1 to September 13.
