Third game drawn

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 1 - Game 3"]
[Date "2014-07-05"]
[Black "Ronald King"]
[White "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 9-14 22-18 2. 5-9 24-19 3. 11-15 18x11 4. 8x24 28x19 5. 4-8 26-22 6. 8-11 27-24 7. 1-5 22-18 8. 9-13 18x9 9. 5x14 25-22 10. 14-17 21x14 11. 10x26 31x22 12. 11-16 24-20 13. 6-10 20x11 14. 7x16 29-25 15. 3-7 22-18 16. 16-20 18-15 17. 20-24 15x6 18. 2x9 23-18 19. 7-10 18-15 20. 10-14 15-10 21. 14 18 10-7 22. 9-14 7-2 23. 24-27 32x23 24. 18x27 2-6 25. 14-18 25-22 1/2-1/2

looked like a close draw by Ron King. His 10.14-17 and 12.11-16 choices gave Sergio Scarpetta some chance to press in the endgame, but Ron managed to withstand.

4th game Drawn, Scarpetta missing win

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 1 - Game 4"]
[Date "2014-07-05"]
[Black "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[White "Ronald King"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-15 24-20 2. 8-11 28-24 3. 9-14 22-17 4. 6-9 17-13 5. 1-6 25-22 (A) 6. 14-18 23x14 7. 9x25 29x22 8. 3-8 (B) 22-17 9. 15-19 24x15 10. 10x19 26-23 11. 19x26 30x23 12. 11-16 20x11 13. 8x15 27-24 14. 7-10 23-19 15. 15-18 17-14 16. 10x17 21x14 17. 2-7 19-15 18. 18-22 31-27 19. 22-26 (C) 1/2-1/2

Note:
(A) 5. ... 25-22? is a loss according to theory.
(B) This lets the win slip away. 8. 4-8 is published as a win for red.
(C) Now the petite combinaison 19. ... 15-11, 20. 7x16 14-9!, 21. 5x14 24-19, 22.16x23 27x2 simplifies into an easily drawn ending.

Ron King was thus lucky to survive the first day.

Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 2 - Game 6"]
[Date "2014-07-06"]
[Black "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[White "Ronald King"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-15 24-20 2. 8-11 28-24 3. 9-14 22-17 4. 6-9 17-13 5. 1-6 23-19 6. 15-18 26-23 7. 14-17 21x14 8. 10x17 23x14 9. 9x18 25-22 ? (A) 10. 18x25 30x14 11. 6-10 14-9 12. 5x14 29-25 (B) 13. 14-17 13-9 14. 17-21!? (C) 32-28 ! (D) 15. 21x30 19-16 16. 12x19 24x6 17. 30-25 6-1 18. 7-10 31-26 19. 4-8 27-24 20. 10-14 1-6 21. 8-12 26-23 22. 25-21!? (E) 23-19 23. 3-8 6-1 24. 21-17 1-6 25. 17-21 6-1 26. 21-25 1-6 27. 25-21 6-1 28. 21-17 1-6 29. 17-21 6-1 1/2-1/2

Did Sergio miss another win?

(A) regarded as bad. Theory prefers 9. ... 25-21
(B) Now the natural 12. ... 13-9 loses to 13.11-16.
(C) Here 14. 10-14 avoids the shot and 14. ... 9-5, 15. 17-21 25-22, 16. 21-25 finally lost in Owen-Gabbard, Lakeside 1981. Unless Ron has something at his sleeve to improve that game, it seems that Sergio missed another publish play win.
(D) This shot simplifies and relieves the tesion for white.
(E) Here 22. 12-16 offers another chance, as now 22. ... 24-19 runs into 23.14-18!, but 23 . ... 23x14, 24. 16x23 6-10 might draw with care.

Scarpetta wins game 7 and leads!

1. Scarpetta, S. - King, R.
WCM (7), 6.7.2014

1.11-15 23-19 2.08-11 22-18 3.15:22 25:18 4.04-08 27-23 5.09-13 26-22 6.11-16 30-26 7.06-09 (A) 18-15? (B)
8.01-06! 32-27
[ Probaly King relied on the move 8...24-20 , but now he saw that to his horror that move loses to a pretty long shot: 9.10-14!! 20:04 10.14-18 23:14 11.09:25 29:22 12.03-08!! 04:11 13.07:30 ]
After this move the white pieces are cramped, and white will eventually lose a piece if not more... 9.16-20! 29-25 10.09-14 19-16
[ 10...22-18 11.07-11 18:09 12.05:14 26-22 13.11:18 22:15 14.02-07! 25-22 ( 14...31-26 15.07-11 26-22 16.11:18 22:15 17.13-17 and white has no move left. ) 15.12-16 19:12 16.10:26 loses ]
11.12:19 23:16 12.10:19 24:15 13.08-12 16-11 14.07:16 15-11 15.16-19! Nice. He gives his extra piece back to get the opponent into zugzwang. 27-24 16.20:27 31:15 17.12-16! 11-08 Giving the piece back, but it is lost anyway...
[ moving a piece on the other wing loses by a shot eg: 17...26-23 18.14-17 21:14 19.06-10 14:07 20.03:26 ]
[ Trying to avoid zugzwang does not work: 17...28-24 18.16-19 24-20 19.14-18 20-16 20.18-23 ]
18.03:12 15-11 19.06-10 28-24 20.16-20 24-19 21.20-24 11-08 22.24-27 08-03 23.27-32 26-23 24.32-28 2-0

Score: Scarpetta 1, King 0, Drawn 6, 17 games to go.

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 2 - Game 8"]
[Date "2014-07-06"]
[Black "Ronald King"]
[White "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-16 21-17 2. 16-19 24x15 3. 10x19 23x16 4. 12x19 27-24 5. 7-10 24x15 6. 10x19 32-27 7. 3-7 22-18 8. 6-10 25-21 9. 10-15 18x11 10. 8x15 17-13 11. 4-8 13x6 12. 1x10 21-17 13. 5-9 29-25 14. 9-14 25-21 15. 2-6 27-24 16. 8-12 31-27 17. 7-11 27-23 18. 11-16 26-22 19. 19x26 30x23 20. 6-9 17-13 21. 16-20 13x6 22. 20x27 23-19 23. 15x24 28x19 24. 27-31 6-1 25. 31-26 22-17 26. 26-22 17-13 27. 22-18 13-9 28. 18-15 1-6 29. 15x24 6x15 30. 12-16 1/2-1/2

The third opening move that was tried in this match was 1.11-16, the Bristol, an opening reported to be especially popular in Babados. Sergio Scarpetta had no troubles to equalize, in contrast, he forced Ron King to make a series of star moves, beginning with 15.2-6. It seems like the Italian Champion is especially well prepared in his opsnings this time. The Champion however showed excellent defensive play when he needed it in very critical situation.

However, he needs to find an opening with red, in which he is able to avert some pressure, as he now trails by one game. Play commences tomorrow at 9.00 MEST with the livestream at:

Game 9:

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 3 - Game 9"]
[Date "2014-07-07"]
[Black "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[White "Ronald King"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-15 23-19 2. 8-11 22-17 3. 3-8 (A) 25-22 4. 11-16 29-25 (B) 5. 16x23 27x11 6. 8x15 24-19 (C) 7. 15x24 28x19 8. 7-11 17-14 9. 9x18 22x8 10. 4x11 26-23 11. 11-15 32-27 12. 15x24 27x20 13. 5-9 30-26 14. 9-14 20-16 15. 12x19 23x16 16. 14-17 21x7 17. 2x20 31-27 18. 6-10 26-22 19. 1-5 25-21 20. 5-9 1/2-1/2

Notes:
(A) The Alma, not named after a beautiful woman, but to commemorate the victims of the bloody battle of Alma in the Crimean War (1854)
(B) Probably part of the home preparation by Ron King, as in their match in 2012 he had troubles to equalize in that seldomly played, but very complicated opening.
(C) Heading straight for simplificaions and an easy draw.

(A) Ron avoids the main lines 3.12-16 or 3.8-11 by transposing into a Kelso opening (1.10-15), usually brought up by this move order: 1. 10-15 22-18, 2. 15x22 25x18, 3. 11-15 18x11, 4. 8x15, same as above.

(B) Sergio chooses a line which allows simplifications, and the game is now heading into a draw.

Score: Scarpetta 1, King 0, Drawn 8, 14 games to go.

Game 15 commences today at 15.00 CEST.

(A) 6. ... 17-14 to a solid draw is the reknown theoretical recommendation. After the text move, an endgame results that looks innocent, but Scarpetta slighly misplays it, loses precious time, and runs into an endgame in which Ron King could play with a majority of Kings. However, the challenger secured the opposition and defendend well. After the longest struggle of this match he secured the draw.e

(B) A loss of time. 32. ... 11-8 saves time and draws easy.

(C) Probably he realized only at that moment that the clearing shot 33. ... 11-7 ends up in a loss.

(D) Maybe 41.14-18 offered more chances for a win.

Score: Scarpetta 1, King 0, Drawn. 12

(A): The Laird and Lady Opening, once reknown as the sharpest and complicated way to begin a game. The romantic name from the 19th century adds to the reputation of this opening.

But, over the centuries it has lost some credit, as many lines were found and today it is still well established, but the most exciting lines have been tamed by analysts and players.

(B): And here we find an improvement over the move 19. 12-16 that had been played in World Championship Matches before. Ron King had sweet memories with it, as he deafeated Jim Morrison with the white apieces in their 1996 World Championship match. However, Sergio is well-prepared and chooses a line that ends up in an enmding in which red had to be careful to draw.

After the game it turned out that it was in fact played in a correspodence match before: Al Lyman v Jim Loy ID 1996. Home preparation for a World Championship Match must be thorough.

(C) Only way to escape with a draw

Score: Scarpetta 1, King 0, Drawn 13, 10 games to go.
