10-year-old schoolboy Maksat Durdiyev wins Turkmen championship on Russian draughts among men
Maksat Durdiyev, 10, from the town of Balkanabat (former Nebit Dag) secured a double victory at Turkmenistan’s championship on Russian draughts. At the first stage, he won decisively in the junior competitions and then he caused a sensation by winning the men’s championship. Having scored equal points with two other candidates to a master of sports, 33-year-old Murad Sariyev from the town of Hazar (Cheleken) and 34-year-old Taganberdy Goshayev from the town of Balkanabat, the young draught-player outdid them by extra showings.
Curiously, a four-grade schoolboy from the town Balkanabat beat one of the national records of his famous brother, Grand Master of international class Mustafa Durdiyev, who became Turkmenistan’s champion at the age of 10 years and three months. Mustafa achieved the same success for the first time at the age of 10 years and six months. Mustafa also owes his triumph to his sister and coach Amangul, 18, the world champion among women on classic British-American draughts.
As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, the Russian draught championship took place in the town of Balkanabat. It was organized by the National Draught Center and funded by the Youth and Trade Unions organizations of the state concern Turkmenneft and Balkanabat’s division of Turkmengashysmat.
