Hello Jacques,
From Hensley Rondei and Cor Verdel I received pictures from the tournament. On some you can see how many spectators there were on Haïti, excellent!! I think everyone will play much better with so many people watching!
Hopefully our very busy webmaster Alexander Presman will find the time one of these days to show the pictures via the Album!

Message from Jan ten Brink:

Dear all,

In the meantime I installed a new version of TurboDambase.

Last night I started a first analysis of all 66 games, see http://www.damclubhiltex.nl/applets [Toernooien] [Analyses PanAmCh 2004].

Analyses of these 66 (11x6) games with totally 3541 moves, are implemented with 5 seconds per ply and a value-difference of 75. The analyses took in total 12 hours and 40 minutes, which means that for evey move 13 seconds were used.

The main variants are visualized without diagrams, but by clicking on a move with the mouse, in the leftframe the diagram is showed.

Kind regards,
JtB

Hello RAOUL

The russians-americans were not in CAP- HAITIEN ?

Why did they take this decision ?

Because of security concerns ?

In 'Album' http://fmjd.org/bb/album_cat.php?cat_id ... SC&start=0
Alexander Presman placed some photographs made by Lélio Marcos and Hensley Rondei from the tournament in Cap-Haïtien.

There are also photographs from a Brasil 64-tournament at

I will start to send to you brazilian news.
We have many 64 tournaments here. Many, many.
One of the most important is our team competition. Last year it was organized with 130 teams. Each team played in that time with 4 players. And they had to chose if they prefer to play in the group under 21 or in the free group. This year, we changed the regulament. Now, we will not get more 2 categories but the team will be with 6 players: 2 (free age and free sex), 3 (under 21, free sex) and 1 (women, free age).
So, the team now will be with 6 players, plus 6 reserves. Em 2006, the team will be 8 players, because we will include 2 boards of 100 square, free age and free sex.
Each city of Sao Paulo Province can organize one team and most of them pay for the players. the competition is organized in 2 parts.
First part in July. The Sao Paulo province is divided in 8 parts. Each part organizes one competition just like a Olimpic Games. Each part has around 26 differents sports with around 10.000 players in all sports. This competition is organized already 67 years. They included 64 brazilian draughts in 1992. After that our game started to develop very fast.
In July the correct name of the competition is JOGOS REGIONAIS DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO.
It´s all organized by Sao Paulo Province Sport Departament.
In each 8 competition the first 2 teams are qualified to play the final. This year the final will be from 11 to 18 September. The correct name of the final is: JOGOS ABERTOS DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO. That means Sao Paulo Open Games. This competition is final for all 26 sports with around 10.000 players too.
In JOGOS REGIONAIS we got last year 130 teams (130 cities). The final (JOGOS ABERTOS) is played with 24 teams.
Last year Yuriy Anikiev played for the team Sao Caetano do Sul that was the gold medal of under 21 division.
I will start to inform you details abour all tournaments we have here.
Attached I´m sending some photos about JOGOS ABERTOS of 2003.
See you...

Lélio Marcos

As you know, Haïti has big political problems and people are suffering of that.

Anthony Alexandre wrote me. I post here his mail in french language.

I will translate later.

You can send a sympathetic mail to him at :

Toutes mes sympathies! Anthony Alexandre

Hello Everyone

I receive an another mail from ANTHONY ALEXANDRE from PORT-AU-PRINCE. I will translate later.

I receive a mail from LOUICEUS SHANG WONG too. Translation later.

Bonjour!

Translation of ANTHONY ALEXANDRE last mail.

I was born in Port-au-Prince 20th Décember of 1975. I began playing Draughts when I was à 12 without having learned with any books. My first participation in tournament was national championship in 1998 where I finished 4th . Since, I became more and more experienced.

Three months before départure of former Président Jean Bertrand Aristide, Haïti was threatened by "pro- gouvernementals " armed looters who wanted to spread terror. I couldn't move as I wanted

Wong is from same city like me. I met him in 1998 in a tournament.
Others players like Alix Louis and Ricardo Pierre are from 2nd city of Haiti là where the game is very practiced. They are safe. Ricardo usually calls me by phone.

Dear Jacques,
We're glad everyone's safe, thank you for telling us!
Señor Hensley Rondei, Main Referee during the 12th Pan Am, asked me to pass on the next message to everyone. Might be helpful if you can find the time to translate it for our friends in France, Haïti and Canada!

Señor Rondei wrote:

This incident happened recently in Belgium. We need to be even more careful everywhere.

A woman went boating one Sunday, taking with her some cans of coke which she put in the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken into ICU and on Wednesday she died. The autopsy revealed a certain Leptospirose caused by the can of coke from which she had drunk, not using a glass. A test showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to wash thoroughly the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them as they have been stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.

A study in Spain showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets i.e. full of germs and bacteria. So to wash them with water is advised before putting it to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Please pass this on to every one.

Andre Leclerc wrote: Hello everybody!

Yes we are far from the glorious days of Marcel Deslauriers, Raoul Dagenais and many other talented players from the same generation (now just about all gone). The formation of new players is difficult but we're working on that. I'm preparing a book on the History of the game in Canada (144 squares) including all the championship games and analysis most of them by Deslauriers himself. This publication along with our participation to the Just for Laughs Festival where will be held the 2nd Marcel-Deslauriers Memorial from July 23-25 2004 (you are invited!!), should contribute to elevate the popularity of the game here, as also ... the comeback of Canadian players on the international scene . In resume, the hill is a high one to climb.
Andre,

Could you send me more information about the book? Preferably by e-mail: info@lambertjan.nl
