Youth Olympiad rules ???????

Post by Nicolas Guibert » Wed Jul 30, 2003 11:56

I noticed on the Youth Olympiads site that the rule used for breaking ties was probably the same that raised so many problems in London in World Team Championship.

In such a team competition, it is just stupid to use the sum of individual points for breaking ties.

Indeed, let's talk about one team that played against Belgium and scored 6-0. Of course its task was easier than winning for example against Mongolia by 4-2.

That means that if you are lucky enough to play the weakest team of the tournament, not only you win 2 points for the tournament but also lots of resistance points for ties-breaking !!!!

The same thing happened in London, with England being the weakest team and (almost) every team winning 6-0 against it. In the last ronde, players started to realize that the rules were not good, and still after the closing ceremony, the Belarus team was rightfully unhappy with its ranking (4th instead of a deserved 3rd)

Did I understand the results badly or was the same stupid rule used in Estonia ?

Let's use normal resistance points (also called solkoff) for breaking ties as in any (individual) competition. No tie-breaking rule is perfect unfortunately, and solkoff is no exception, but why do we use the most stupid one ?
