Mozambican Checkers

Mozambican Checkers is unique in that one must give preference to the capture sequence with the highest combined piece value. A Man counts as one and a King counts as two. Otherwise the rules are the same as in International Draughts.

Ticino Checkers (Dama Ticinese)

This 8x8 variant was played in Ticino, the southernmost canton of Switzerland. It follows similar rules as Anglo-Saxon checkers, except that a Man may capture backwards subsequently, as part of a capture sequence (“deferred backwards capture”).

Hoogland Checkers

Herman Hoogland (1891-1955) became world champion in 1912. He designed an 8x8 variant where the king can also capture orthogonally, but only an enemy king (not a man). Hoogland Checkers became very popular after WWII, but has since been forgotten. The advantage is that two kings win against one. Ima...

Preventing the 3 vs. 1 draw by prohibiting king slide to 1 and 50 (?)

If it weren't for the 3 kings vs. 1 king draw, then International Draughts wouldn't suffer from the many draws. As far as I understand, 3 versus 1 would win on a different board geometry, with two long diagonals, because there are no double corners. This would allow the three kings to win by tactica...

Astral Checkers (an interesting novelty)

https://i.imgur.com/NSEVGhp.jpeg I post this new checkers variant, because it deserves attention. It is played on a hexagonal board. A Man has a shield which protects it from capture. If the shield is directed toward an enemy piece, the latter cannot capture it. It is possible to change direction o...

Yet a suggestion of king movement rule change...

How about Zapawa's new idea? A King may not slide passed a square threatened by an enemy King to an unthreatened square—only to squares threatened. (The King is always allowed to sacrifice itself.) The rule is only valid for slides. Thus, the King may always jump over a threatened square while perfo...
